I did this guessing game last year on these 3 threads in 2018. I don't know if anyone is interested again to guess what a seedling's blooms might look like?

So, while we all wait for Spring to arrive and blooms to delight us, I am going to start the guessing game for 2019:

I currently have one seedling producing scapes and buds. This will be it's 1st year to bloom. It will be interesting to see what this cross produces in flowers. I would love to hear what everyone thinks the blooms will look like. (A kind of guessing or prediction game.)

My first daylily seedling with a single scape and buds .....

UUU07 (sowed August 2017) - Little Jet Setter x CCC01 (Laughing Clown x Zanti Misfit):



Little Jet Setter is a bicolor that I love. Here is the link to read more about this cultivar: Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Little Jet Setter')

CCC01 is one of the very first seedlings of which I won the seeds on the LA in 2015. It is also one that has been outstanding in my garden. And it is one that I will likely register and name in the future.

What do YOU think the blooms of UUU07 will look like????

Rule: Only post a photo of seedlings that are CURRENTLY budding. Nothing worse than making a prediction on a seedling that does not bloom at all this year. LOL! I love to see the results shortly after my prediction. So share a photo of the first or second bloom from your seedling once it actually blooms!

You just never know for sure what you might get in blooms with any cross.

I predict a bloom around 5", no way to guess on mature scape size this year- and the flowers will be a deep shade of pink with a purple/plum eye... Maybe some light veining. Tepals and sepal more elongated that LJS.

Becky I liked your threads last year, and I'm looking forward to this year's seedling threads (and monthly bloom threads, and the oddities thread and and and! )

Oh, Diana. I think you're pretty good at this game! I can definitely see it matching your description.

I like playing, so I'll take a try at it.

I think form and bi-tone sepals will be driven by little jet setter, but a lot of the look of the bloom will be driven by Laughing Clown, which may give you something a little like this, but hopefully with a more prominent raspberry or blueberry eyezone.

I think it will be purple/lavender (more like Little Jet Setter).
The form will draw from both but lean more toward the pollen parent.
I think the height will be about 25" with 5" blooms.

Can't wait to see it.

First I really like the scape on your seedling, this is the most important thing that I look for in a seedling. The color could be any combination of the above. I do think the bloom will be less than 5" maybe no more than 4" and will have a great scape.

I can't wait to see it bloom! I agree with Fred about the scape, and I'm totally in love with your pollen parent.

Diana, Tim, Sue, Fred, and Mary - I hope you all are right! I don't know why, but a pink bloom didn't even occur to me. I was thinking either a deep red or a purple bloom. I would love a pink bloom! And with bi-tone sepals would be awesome! Now I am excited to see what this baby produces. I think this is why I never get bored of daylilies ..... Constant surprises during the bloom season!

Fred and Josie - Thank you for the compliment on my seedling (CCC01). I am going to register it (hopefully this year). I already have a few names to consider. My family members are going to get some and then I will share some fans with others. It would be a good parent plant for hybridizing because of the scape bud count and branching. I am curious if it is a definite evergreen. Josie, you might be a person I would like to share a couple fans with, to see how it does in Zone 5b. I have a pretty strong feeling though, that it is an evergreen because it's habits are that of an evergreen.

CCC01 sure stands nice and tall above the foliage!!!

I am guessing a 4.5 flower about 24" think the color will be more magenta with some veining yell to grn throat, throat will be larger like the pollen parent. Think it will not be as round as the pod parent but not a ufo & think it will lose the bitone.
I have just started my first seeds off the LA so have 0 experience in seeing what may happen but what I have seen on here etc it can be anything. So I have just as much chance as anyone

We do have a big problem here on the Alabama Gulf Coast and Florida trying to determine the foliage habit, we had less than 5 nights below freezing this year, maybe only 2. I can tell the dormants, they never go away but stay about 2" high most of the winter. I have to really pay attention to the others to determine how to registered them and still they may be different in the north. I understand why so many coming out of Florida are registered semi evergreen, not that I agree with the policy but I do get the reason.

Do many (or any) of the hybridizers have people test their DL's in other climates? I'm sure it could be a daunting process and still not fool proof. Or is it just standard procedure to register it by it's habits in the location where it was hybridized?

Some hybridizers do have some of their plants tested in different climates, but I think it is pretty much standard procedure to register them in the location of the hybridizer. I know Dan Hansen(Florida) notes which ones of his plants have been tested in a northern climate.

I think Larry is correct that some have a few tested, but it would not be feasible to send them all because of the amount they register each year. I think most, not all of the ones that are sent north early is because someone was lucky enough to get it (or buy it) early to hybridize with.

I have tested one registered cultivar by LarryR. The plant is beautiful, but does not seem to like the heat of southeast Florida. It has not done well here in my garden, unfortunately. But I was honored to have the opportunity to test it in my garden.

I am a hobby hybridizer. As I have mentioned in past posts, I am mainly trying to hybridize to create daylilies for loved ones (some in memory of a lost loved one). I plan to share any daylilies I register with my family and friends, but also hoping to share them with others here on the forum should they do well enough divide them enough times. That is a tall order since I don't spray with chemicals to thwart pests and I don't give them extra care. I grow organically because I provide a wildlife habit in my yard. (Mainly for birds and butterflies!)

If any of mine are registration worthy that others here find have good qualities for using them in their own hybridizing program, I would be delighted to share them when possible, as well. But my main intent is creating rust-free daylilies that do well in hotter climates such as mine. Fortunately, most of my relatives and close friends live here in Florida, too!

So far, it appears to have 3 branches with the top branch in a V split:


And here is a close-up of the oldest buds forming and starting to show some color:


The color forming looks like a reddish color or perhaps a deep pink or perhaps even a purplish color. It appears to be taking on more of the bloom shape of CCC01 with the longer petals. And the branching on it's very first scape is promising! 3 branches so far. Both parents have this sort of branching. I have often found with seedlings that the first year or two of blooming, it does not really show it's potential until the 2nd or 3rd year. When the plant has matured and spread and settled in happily, is when I notice it's full potential like CCC01 has after several years growing in it's spot.

Looks like the first bloom is close to opening! It's got some decent branching and bud count for a seedling's first bloom. I haven't had time to do the stats yet on it. Hopefully it will be blooming in the next couple of days.

It looks like there is 3 or possibly 4 branches with a current total of 18 buds so far!

So what is your take on the bloom color looking at the underside of the bud? It sure looks similar to CCC01. Looks like deep reddish or purplish petals with a wide yellow eye. Not a large bloom though, Maybe 4 1/2"? Not sure.

Perhaps Maroon color? I can't quite tell what color the bloom will likely be. I don't usually look at the underside of any of my daylily blooms enough to know if this is showing the true bloom color or a variation of what the bloom will look like. Opinions, anyone?

Oh baby!!! Gettin' close!!! I'm thinking my guess is out, especially the part about it having bitone sepals. I think my money is on Marcia's magenta idea. Maybe a slightly darker magenta.
