Lots of annuals like poppies, corncockles, toadflax and cornflowers were common sights in meadows when I was a child. Unfortunately 98% of these areas have declined or disappeared since then due to intensive farming and building.

Thanks for the answer, ZM - was curious about that myself. Ordered some dwarf blues from Eden Brothers this spring and anxious to see them in bloom again. Haven't grown them for a few years, but I was just asking myself the other day, "Wonder why they call Bachelor Buttons cornflowers? Now I know.
