I haven't been recording all the errors I've seen in the dictionary (more than I would have liked to see), but this entry has every species name it lists misspelled.

https://garden.org/nga/diction...

barrel cactus n. A common name for 3 different cacti: Echinocactus Garusonii, Ferocactus ancanthoides, and F. wislizenii.

The correct spellings and capitalization are
E. grusonii, F. cylindraceus (new species name, and acanthodes was misspelled anyway), F. wislizeni (single i at end)

As a grower of said barrel cacti, I would the name describes all Ferocactus species, a few Echinocactus species, and other spiny cacti with similar proportions.

@Trish is there any way we can make corrections to the dictionary? Because I can come up with a few more. Smiling

At the moment, only Dave, Jon, and me can make edits to the dictionary. Post them here, or treemail one of us and we will add/edit as needed.

Thanks so much for your help and effort in this project! I tip my hat to you.

Thank you. For now there is the correction above for "barrel cacti", plus this one for "Aloe":

https://garden.org/nga/diction...

where the text

A genus of between 200 and 250 species of tender succulent perennials, shrubs, and trees (Liliaceae)

should read

A genus of about 500 species of tender succulent perennials, shrubs, and trees (Asphodelaceae)

And if I come across more, I will post them here.

There have been requests in other threads to add terms... here are the ones I'd like to see, formatted as close as I could get to the dictionary format.

caudex (kaw'-deks) - n. 1. The axis of a plant, consisting of stem and root. 2. A swollen or enlarged storage organ arising from stem and/or roots, particularly one dedicated to storing water. 3. The main stem of a tree, especially a palm, cycad or tree fern.

caudiciform (kaw-dis'-ih-form) - n. A plant with a caudex.

pachycaul (pak'-ee-kahl) - adj. A plant with a disproportionately thick stem or trunk for its size.

secund (see'-kuhnd) - adj. (Describing flowers or leaves) all directed toward the same side of a stem.

geophyte (gee'-uh-fite) - n. A plant with an enlarged underground food or water storage organ, such as a rhizome, bulb, tuber, or corm, parts of which may give rise to a new plant.

geophytic (gee-uh-fit'-ic) - adj. Referring to a geophyte, or plant with an underground storage organ.

I found something that needs correction; information appears to have been omitted at the end of the sentence: https://garden.org/nga/diction...

It currently reads as follows:
ramentum (ruh mehn'tuhm) n., pl. ramenya. In botany, a thin, brownish, fringed scale that appears on

It should read:
ramentumThin brownish chaffy scales upon the leaves or young shoots of some plants, especially upon the petioles and leaves of ferns.

Also, I think the plural is ramenta, rather than ramenya.

Thank You!

From the first post in this thread, the text for "barrel cactus" should be

A common name for 3 different cacti: Echinocactus grusonii, Ferocactus cylindraceus, and F. wislizeni, plus other members of those 2 genera.

Hi,

I believe the term "Mushquash Root" listed in the gardening dictionary should be "Musquash Root". Searching for this term did not turn up any results in the database, so I searched for Cicuta maculata (Water Hemlock). I was then going to add Mushquash Root as a synonym for Water Hemlock, but then found that it might be misspelled. Could you check this out to make sure it is correct?
