Can iris have a beard that is two different colors? I do see a few that have yellow and white beards, mine is orange and purple. Or is the beard actually orange and you call that other part something else? Sorry if that is an ignorant question I don't know the names of the plant parts all that well.

You're correct in calling them beards. As for whether or not they can be bi-colored, I haven't seen very many like that. My Friendly Advice iris has two colors in its beard, though, orange and lilac.

'Godsend' is another example of an iris with different colors in the beard. It's beard color description:
"Red orange changing to electric violet toward fuzzy amethyst horns".

Tom ~ Isn't that beard orange, or red-orange?
(I don't think that color is on our flag.)

AH HA....so that is what a spike is? I thought it might be but wasn't sure. I thought maybe it was either HYSTERIA or FLYING DOWN TO RIO, but neither of those has a bi color beard. Sure was fun to look at though. And thanks for the comments. Anyone live in Arizona besides me? : Crossing Fingers!

So your right, my Iris does look like Awesome Alex except for the upper petals are white instead of the color of the lower petals, and the beard on the Awesome Alex is a deeper reddish, where the one on mine is a brighter orange.

Well, I'll take more pictures of Awesome Alex, if it blooms this year. I moved it last year and it did not bloom.

It the mean time, keep on searching for irises with "horns". Maybe you can find one closer in the database. Just go to the database and check two things...tall bearded and horns. Then look through those and see if you can get a better match.
