I am hoping someone could shed some light on my Concertina dilemma.

I have two Concertina's acquired from two different places. Neither Concertina ever shows purple based foliage. They are both IB's. Concertina #1 blooms a little bit earlier than Concertina #2. Last year was the first time they both bloomed for me, not realizing there was slight differences between the two. I think I entered a picture from each clump into the database.

Concertina #1 Last year and this year

Except for the foliage ...I think they both match the description and there are pictures that match both in the database...along with some pictures that look like neither.

Any help and ideas on the situation would be appreciated!

May this week be simply spectacular for you!

Not sure how this would apply, but perhaps that PBF shows up better depending on what zone it is in. Alternately, your Concertina(s) may not have PBF period. Shrug!

Good luck with this mystery - though, both are equally pretty to me!
TB 'Starting Fresh' blooming for me in May of 2022. It bloomed for a week and a half with nine buds.

Take a look at twice Thrilling. I am in the same boat. With a very similar Iris. Differences are very subtle. Keep name tags, order lists ect forever. Wish I knew then what I know now Sighing!

One looks more like IB Viper. I would suggest your take one rhizome of each and grow them side by side. This way they will have the same light, soil, water, etc. and then compare height, standards open or more closed, and beards both on new blooms and older blooms. PBF in some varieties is always there and in others seems to come and go year to year.

Since you have it growing in different locations that may be what is causing the slight differences. Good luck. Thumbs up

Interesting, I purchased a rhizome labeled Concertina but was told it was likely viper because of the shape of the beards. My iris has shorter falls like Concertina #2

Thank You! Last year they were grown close...when I realized the differences I moved them across the way from each other this year. I have wondered the most about the one that looks like Viper. I have had them both 3 years and neither one has ever had any PBF. I know PBF can be there or not depending on conditions. Did not know if anyone had experience with Concertina's habits regarding PBF. I think I will move Concertina #2 out of the database.

May you experience a special miracle just for you this week!

it has a two-toned beard and sometimes has faint pbf, and horns on the blossoms.

For all it's worth, I've had my Concertina for 2 years and never seen any PBF on it. Disclaimer: It did not bloom yet, so I can't be sure it really is Concertina. I hope you manage to solve the mystery! Crossing Fingers!

Thank You! to ALL OF YOU for your help and responses! I am confident enough to say that Concertina #2 is not Concertina...and with Bonnie's heads up it could be Viper. Last years picture was removed from the database.

May everyone be blessed with a joyful and Happy Easter!

Usually the purple starts at the base and runs up the bottom of the falls. Those are the first pink topped rhizomes I think I have ever seen. Interesting!
