I am a novice gardener who was gifted these orchids three years ago. I nearly killed them (I was not giving them enough water) until a friend told me I was starving them and helped me bring them back from the brink of death. Since then I have been dutifully watering them every week and keeping them in a sunny (relative word because I live in the PNW) location in my house.

Is there anything else I should be doing? It looks like new roots are growing wild above the pot— is this ok? Some of he older roots don't look so good. Do I just leave them alone and continue watering once a week? Do I need to replace the soil? Get a bigger pot? Do anything with the new roots? Fertilize? Etc? Thanks in advance- Any advice is much appreciated!!

Every Orchid aficionado has their own special recommendations for Orchid care, especially in regard to potting and fertilizing. Phalaenopsis Orchids are remarkably adaptable to a wide range of conditions. That is why they are popular and why you will find widely varying recommendations as to their care.

Yours appears to be quite healthy so I would not recommend making any significant changes even though it is potted in an unorthodox manner. Sometimes trying to improve on something that is doing well just makes it worse. The roots outside the pot are fine and probably benefiting from the humid air in the PAC NW. You might give it some Orchid fertilizer every once in a while.

Read through our thread about growing Supermarket Orchids-Phalaenopsis. There are numerous posts there regarding Phalaenopsis care and culture.
Go to the American Orchid Society website. www.aos.org
At the top of the page, I think it might be under member services, you will find downloadable and printable pdf files on orchid culture. Print the one on Phalaenopsis care. If it is not under member services, they are under one of those pull downs at the top of the page.

If it were me, I would repot it using orchid bark. It looks from the photos like it is in bark now, but it is hard to tell. The bark may be quite broken down by now. You may have to move up a pot size, but don't go much bigger, just enough to accommodate the roots. Use a plastic orchid pot with good air ventilation. If you are unsure how to proceed, you can find videos on repotting orchids on the internet.
