I am interested in hollyhocks. The information I am getting from different sellers state different things. Some say they can be grown in zone 9 some say up to zone 8. Lowes and Walmar t both sell the Hollyhock roots here. I purchased a walmar t root and placed it in a large pot. The root had leaves grow out of it, but a stalk never grew and the leaves stayed small. I eventually just stopped watering it because nothing has changed for a year. Any info would be appreciated.
I contacted the supplier of the walmar t hollyhocks van zydern. I asked about the zone. I received an odd response. I was told that it would grow in my area, but then they said keep it cool and in a sunny spot. Here the weather has been upper 80s to mix 90s. It's steaming hot outside there is no way to keep it cool.
I have successfully grown hollyhocks here... but... it was strictly from seed.
Really doubt that you are going to have much luck with purchased roots. Maybe put it in a sunny window? or an air conditioned greenhouse?
Eric, you would probably have to start a variety such as 'Spring Celebrities,' from a packet of seeds, by November & then they'd likely flower before it gets too hot, about 4 to 5 months later, after planting out.
