Howdy SW friends!

Here's some snapshots of our Spring projects. We had three goals: paint the exterior of the house, revamp the metal storage barn into a functional workspace to include new floor and sheet metal roofing on the undone half, and lay a flagstone back patio. We did five! The two extras including shoveling out a pathway in the sea of rock (garden to hoop house) and use it to reinforce our lower driveway and construct a set of horseshoe pits. Not all are complete in these photos, but we are very close! This old mare earned her hay this season under the guidance and instruction of Hubs.

I just wanted to share for those who are following along with our journey. I'll try to snap some garden and planter photos this morning. Huge upgrades this year.

Thank you Karen and Linda. It has been a full and busy Spring. Heading out this morning to harvest more peas and and cabbage. The temps are expected to climb this week.

Trying to find a place for my Indian Hawthorne. I keep going back and forth putting it along the pathway edge. I hate the idea of a snake resting under a bush I can't see under.

Enjoy your day!

Are those dwarf Fava Beans growing in that container?
One has to do more than just read. They have to investigate and think for themselves.

Thats not my garden. Thats Gina's garden.

But I do have a thriving vegetable garden in Mesa. Though I have tried to grow Standard Fava Beans twice and failed. The 240 days required for harvest was not enough. And each time I pulled them so I could plant something else. But I just purchased Dwarf Fava Beans seeds with a 100-110 day from planting to harvest time frame. And was hoping Gina could tell me about what looks like a Dwarf Fava Bean planting in her garden.

So sorry, about the mixup, thisisme. I kept looking at that and thinking it looked a lot like Gina's garden. D'Oh! *Blush*

Hi Thisisme,

No, I don't think those were dwarf Fava beans. I had to take them out and salvage whatever seeds I could as I planted all I had. I'm hoping they are good for the fall.

I bought the beans thinking they would be warm weather like other beans, but apparently they are meant for the fall to harvest the following June. They can be picked earlier for smaller beans, but I understanding leaving them over winter will produce the large 8" pods that I am hoping for. I plan to sow these seeds come September. They ought to be hardy enough to sustain our winters as they will be outside. My pole beans aren't doing as well as I expected either. I guess it too hot for them. Probably get a late harvest, but I planted these seeds in March/April. They sure took their time breaking soil, but our Spring was unusual this year... almost cold at 3500 elevation.

Anyway, these were coming along great and then one day they began to turn black and wilt. I pulled them right away, hung to dry, then pulled the seeds. Never tried them before and was so excited as I love Fava beans. I had hoped being in the shade house they could manage through the heat. Not so. D'Oh!

Best of luck with yours! Keep us updated!

Thank you for responding Gina.

I will be planting Dwarf Fava beans in September and should be harvesting in December. I know the beans are smaller than the standard varieties. But they take less than half the time to grow. And 240+ days from seed to harvest is a long time to keep bean plants healthy.

It sure is a long time, Thisisme!

I might have to follow your lead and look for some drawf varieties. The standard gets mighty tall and bushy from what I've learned and I really pack my bed quite full as it is...

Hubs keeps telling me to just stick with the true and tried, but I get restless. Always wanting at least one new veggie in the mix. Besides, I figure it's the only way for me to expand my experience.

Thanks for the information, I appreciate it. Happy Gardening!

I have read descriptions of seed to harvest anywhere from 80-110 days. But thats way shorter than 240+ days for the standard varieties.
