Just curious what everyone's favorite tomatoes are. Here in Minnesota zone 4, I like to stick to around 70 day varieties, though I always seem to try a few that take longer-I just bought some Cherokee Purple's because the plants looked so beautiful when I was a the nursery earlier today Smiling

I have tried to track my tomatoes for the past several years. I often find ones I really like, but then can't find them again. So then I pick new varieties. I buy seedlings so am limited to what the nurseries offer. I also have a short growing season, and try for those in the 65-70 day range, although I've had good luck with some longer.

My favorites:

SunSugar - orange cherry, sweet, productive, does not crack, indeterminate, hybrid, 65 days
Bloody Butcher - red salad, deep flavor, fairly productive, bit of cracking, indeterminate, heirloom, 65 days
Lemon Drop - yellow cherry, sweet, ripens in cool weather, indeterminate, open pollinated, 85 days
Sweet Baby Girl - red cherry, delicious, productive, indeterminate, hybrid, 65 days
Pineapple - yellow/red salad, rich fruity flavor, tends to crack, indeterminate, heirloom, 85 days

This year I am growing: Brandywine, Lucky Tiger, SunSugar, Sakura, Esterina, Damsel, Pineapple.

I prefer Green Zebra but have had good fortune with Cherokee Purple and many other dark tomatoes.
Last summer, Cherokee Purple and Black Krim yielded to the point a lot fell to the ground and were left or went into the compost heap as I had more than we could use and I do not can .

I found Green Zebra a pretty tomato but didn't have a lot of taste for me. Could have been the year. I'd try it again. I keep trying the purple toms but am so far not enamored of any.

I like my tomatoes to bite back when I bite into them, i.e. acidic, and Green Zebra have so far been the best for good old fashioned tomato sandwiches. Thumbs up

I check catalogs for other such tomatoes, but as , so far, I have not restarted the gumption to start my own, and while I have been successful just putting seeds in the ground, it is not my favorite way to grow them, I have not found plants of most of the others with a zippy flavor.

A couple of the yellow-red ones are not bad.
The catalogs -- say -- "good old fashioned tomato flavor" often, with the black/purple ones, which is as meaningless as a politicians speech, often, but they do not seem to trot out the "sweet" bs many time when they say "good old fashioned tomato flavor" so I favor that hype. Blinking

My seedlings did not like the new starter soil that I started them in.
So I am growing old reliables this year.
