Bugbane (Actaea simplex 'Hillside Black Beauty')

I found this at a nursery and its only about 8inches tall. How fast do these grow? Will it shoot up quickly, or take a long time to get any real height? Also is it fussy about being moved? The place I want to put it has a hosta in front of it, (house behind it along foundation) and I am worried if I put that little thing there, the hosta will shade it too much and swamp over it preventing it from growing out. So I thought I'd plant it somewhere else until it got 18-24 inches tall and then move it to where I want it. Or maybe it'd be better to move the hosta?

I did not have any trouble of it growing tall the first yr planted it just did not spread as fast as I wanted or expected. I do have it in dark shade absolutely no sun area and not as moist as it probably would like. When I first got it I did move it to my new property a year later and it did not seem to mind.

thank you! that helps. My spot is on the east side so it gets sun til about noon or one and it is kind of dry. I hope it will do okay there.

It will grow taller rather quickly. I have most of the dark varieties. All do well in shade. some moderate sun would be beneficial. i think your eastern exposure should work well for you..

Thank you! I have the hillside beauty, does that stay dark colored into the summer?

Yes they stay dark. May get a hint of green in the center of the leaves.

I guess I meant, does the dark color vary by the amount of sunlight? I'm wondering if I need to place it in the right shade/sun to keep it the darker color?

In my dark shade it stayed dark all season. Before I moved it there was morning sun it was dark but with as was said a hint of dark green. If you plant it with a yellow hosta or coral bell it will look black even if it gets a little less dark color if you are planting for a dark contrast.
