I was curious about winter care of agapanthus. Most internet sites just said that it wasn't cold hardy. Frost will freeze the rhizomes. I did find a good article from a website called Gardenia.net that you might want to read. It advised digging up the rhizomes before the first frost, drying them, wrapping them in newspaper and keeping in a cool, dark location, 40-50 F. The alternative method is to keep the whole plant in the pot, bring inside, treating it as a houseplant, but with less watering in the winter. An evergreen agapanthus will keep its leaves, a deciduous agapanthus will lose its leaves, and go dormant, during the winter. I like the pot method more, since agapanthus can take a long time to reestablish themselves and bloom after planting. I would think that digging them up each winter would have a negative effect on blooming, which is the whole point of growing them.
