Not garden related but I know someone will know what this part is for. Found in a cheap socket set we use for light duty around the house. There's nothing like it in our heavier Craftsman set. What is it and what is it used for?

I think it is called something like a speed adapter ring. You put it on the ratchet under the socket and turn it with your thumb to speed up tightening or removing a bolt once it is loose enough.
