Hi, I have a small collection of mini hosta and have been wanting to make a trough for them. Has anyone made them before? If you have, could you share what you used for the form and pics if you have the time to post.
I have made pots but nothing very large.

Thanks!

Hi Teresa,
I've made them and they would be great for your mini hosta. You can use just about anything that has a firm side, like a milk jug, a woven basket, tupperware like containers. The main thing to remember is you'll need two cotainers for each project. You'll line the larger one with the thickness you want your walls, poke holes in the bottom for drainage, and then put your smaller container in to maintain the size of the bowl area of your project and the walls. I did one in a basket and couldn't get the basket off so I just left it and it like it. Line your "tufas" with a garbage bag or something to they won't stick to the mold.

I can't find the pics of mine but these are some that Tom Bruce of Carolina Daylilies & Hosta made. He puts mini hosta in them and they look great.

Leslie, you've inspired me. I'm going to sign up for a class at the botanical garden this February to learn how to make them. I've got a lot of alpine/rock garden seeds to plant this winter and all those seedlings will be needing planters!

Elena, that's great! You'll be surprised how light they are. You can also stain your mix different colors. I'm looking for the pics of the ones I did.

I've been wanting to do this too. I bought my cement mix but haven't gotten around to it yet. I can't wait to see pictures of yours Leslie.

Good luck with yours Teresa.

I did take the class & made my planter! With everything going on I kinda forgot about it. I actually came across it this weekend & set it outside to have the rain help lower the pH. I can't wait until I can plant my Lewisia in it! I'm definitely going to make more. Thumbs up

Is anyone growing mini hosta in these? I wonder what size I should make and how they well they would overwinter in zone 6.
