Thread OP

Hello! I recently purchased a home that I hope to use as a vacation property for my family and a short term rental (AirBNB). The house has a large deck with a lot of sections for plantings that are currently just weeds.

The house is located in Zone 6b in Central VA. The beds face mostly North, a little East. There's a fair amount of tree cover but I think they'll get plenty of sun.

I'm new to this - can you recommend good plants for these beds? Any other tips or thoughts?

Desires:
Minimal/Zero maintenance since we won't always be there to maintian them
Not very tall plants - they're already relative high raised beds
Good at blocking out weeds - again, minimal maintenance
Deer resistant - tons of deer roaming around
Neat but necessary if edible fruits/veg/flowers or herbs

Thanks for your help!!

Deer will eat anything if desperate enough but daylilies come to mind and in areas that are shadier hostas and ferns.

I agree

grasses ...Blood grass, lemon grass ...and /or Northern sea oats

blue rug juniper (fast, low grower + zero maintenance )

Japanese painted ferns for the shade areas ....

Indian Hawthorn (in perhaps the lower level / larger boxes) or better yet, native Rhododendron

holly and / or Oregon grape holly along the hillside

North/East with that tall house sounds mostly shady.

I would get that criss cross stuff put on to screen the gaping underneath of the deck.
Weed the beds and put a good layer of mulch in all.
Juniper, ferns, native Rhodos all nice.
Don't make it too complicated and don't plant too much against the steps. You don't want your AirBnBrs coming out to find snakes sunning on the steps because there is so much underbrush and groundcover around and few people.

Hosta= deer candy, what my friends say. Also vole candy in my experience.

Northern sea oats- seeds everywhere, I have grown it. Don't recommend.

Going to be amazing once cleaned up and planted! I'm jealous Thumbs up
Plant it and they will come.
