My 5 year old picked me out a gorgeous mini phal orchid at the grocery store. He was so excited I couldn't say no. I have big ones at home just never the little ones!

So the orchid is in a tiny nursery pot inside a decorative pot which works for now but I'd love to get it in a more airy pot like some of the commercial orchid pots. My only problem is trying to find ones small enough. Does anyone know any places to find them? (US)

Or, use your imagination:

I found the dog at the local nursery. It has a drain hole so I pull the little plastic sleeve off the roots and buried it in more sphagnum moss. The orange thing is a small soup bowl so no holes. I put marbles in the bottom and put the plants, in their original sleeves, side by side in the bowl. When I water, I do have to pour the water back out of the soup bowl.

Daisy, you can get drill bits for ceramics and they are great for making holes in things like your soup bowl. Just google masonry bits or ceramic drill bits. The big box stores have many sizes and styles.

Yes, I have drilled holes in odd bowls before but, these plants are in little pots of their own (actually, the little plastic sleeves they came in), not planted directly into the cup.

Gotcha. I just hate having to drain pots that have no holes and around here any excess water can be deadly but I suspect in your climate a tad more moisture won't hurt. Do you ever wonder how the growers can pack so much moss into those tiny plastic sleeves?

I do. And also understand why people tend to kill orchids in moss. I'm a notorious non-waterer so moss is actually a good idea for me. Smiling

Wish Coconut shells were longer lasting. I'd love to plant a few small Orchids in them... so "Natural" looking.

People in south Florida use them, but NOT as a pot. They split them along a bias and mount orchids on them. They hang it vertically with the orchid, typically a Phalaenopsis about a third of the way up from the bottom. Looks very natural.

Awesome, thank you all for all the responses! For now I'm going to keep letting her bloom and I'll keep an eye out for a cool pot. I drill a lot of pots so I could drill some

Another of my favorite tiny pot idea: Fancy teacups from the thrift store.
