That definitely doesn't look like daylily roots to me (maybe a ditchlily since they have runners and such instead of regular roots like daylilies)

On the seeds, no you do not have to wait until Sept to plant. In your area, you really need to plant now so you can have the seedlings planted in the ground or pot or wherever by September 15th. If you plant the seeds now they will be about 6 weeks old come Sept 15th. Planting by Sept. 15th gives it time to get rooted in the ground good before the cold comes plus it will help you to get blooms the following spring (no guarantee)

Around here we started planting our seeds the end of June and first of July. I still have a few more to plant and I will be done.

My first thought was crab grass as well - I have tons of that around here and it looks just like that!

I hope the kind we have here in Michigan don't have nuts that are 8" deep. Otherwise, I will have it forever I guess. Sad

Christine, thanks for the confirmation on the crab grass, at least in my case. I've always thought that was what I had in the flower beds, and it does look just like this. I know for sure that mine is not any kind of daylily. The root system is unbelievable. I've been trying to get rid of it for several years, but always miss some roots. They sure like to run! I've spent the last two days trying to remove it from my neighbors rose bushes, and that's turning into a nightmare!

I got a bunch of "free" mulch last fall and was so excited... then this year to my dismay I realized it really wasnt "free" at all......... it was full of crabgrass seeds which of course have gone crazy in my daylily garden! I am down on my hands and knees with a 6 gallon buck pulling that crab grass out. I alswyas have to take a double take to make sure I dont have hold of a Daylily before I give a final yank.
Pulled one out so big yesterday that it pulled up the "weed cloth" and I went flying backwards into the brid feeder when it finally let loose!

That's horrible! My "paid for" mulch came with mushrooms this year! Lots and lots of mushrooms. But, it's a lot easier to pull them than it is to pull crab grass.

Well thanks to everyone for their input. We are going to pull it up this afternoon and really are excited about it. It is just amazing the resemblence of a daylily sprout. The only difference is that daylilies usually grow in a clump and these are kind of by themselves. Wish we would of found this site earlier...lol.

Going to try to plant our seeds this weekend as well. Hope they turn out.

Crab Grass is an annual weed which doesn't live over winter...it comes from seed each year. I often see it where some one scalps the lawn with a weed eater and the crabs grass takes over. The picture is not crab grass. The grass that sends out increase with stolons....the white root looking things is a perennial grass called Johnson's Grass. It is impossible to weed out as even a tiny section of the stolon will form a new plants. Grass Be Gone or Post will take it out but I don't know if they are recommended for use on DL. Read the label or some here will know. Mushrooms grow in decomposing organic matter so some times they will grow in compost. To me they are just a cosmetic problem and don't do any harm they will disappear as the organic material breaks down.

I found an unusual amount of day lily sprouts growing on the side of the spent flower stalks this year. I planted over a dozen of them. Aside from seed, self mulitplying, is this another way a DL reproduces?
