In spring of 2018, shopping at Lowe's for potting soil, I was surprised to see an entire table of very good looking Agapanthus in one gallon cans. The price was ridiculously fair, so I grabbed three. I knew they like to be root bound... so I potted all three in a fair sized clay pot.
They sat on my patio all summer... and produced a very generous and long-lasting display of blooms.
In late fall I brought the pot inside and placed it, with other tropicals, on a large table placed as close as possible to the large south-facing living room window. As winter progressed I gave them just enough maintenance to keep them healthy.
On January 20th I began watering the tropical plants on the living room table... but I stopped suddenly when I realized I was seeing two flower stalks emerging from the Agapanthus foliage. I was so surprised I called a friend at the Missouri Botanical Garden to ask if I had stressed the plant severely... and the flower stalks were a stress reaction. He just laughed and said, "No, you must be doing something right... enjoy the show."
Between January 20th and February 5th the plant put up a total of seven flower stalks. The bloom display lasted until March 3rd.
I divided the clump last spring and now have four nice sized pots... that have just been brought in for winter.
I cannot help but wonder if a winter bloom display will repeat itself. That would really be something.-
