Hi
I am new to gardening and to this forum, I am located in New Delhi, India. My English might not be as good as everyone else. Please do expect lot of grammar and spelling mistakes.
I recently started with a few vegetable plants with an objective of being self sufficient and growing 100% organic food. I have had some minor success as some of the seedlings have germinated to small plants while others are struggling to make it.
Buying the pots and the soil was a very difficult part back then as I had to bring them up on 10th Floor. Next question for me was what I was going to plant in them? While watching video on you tube I came across a video that it was really easy to plant cilantro ( coriander seeds). So we gave it a try and wallah it was instant success. Seeds got germinated in 9-12 days and we can already see coriander growing in our pots. So excited!! to be a grower.
After that I started reading more about different types of soil, fertilizers and Pesticides. So I prepared a soil mix of 50% coco peat and 50% soil ( the soil we get here feels like sand when I put my hand in it). Its light brown in color.
I wanted to grow more and more. I watched more videos and ended up seeding Mint, Potatoes, Onions, Green Chilies, White Raddish, Citrus, Curry Leaves, Aloe Vera and Egg Plant.
I am using Cow Dung ( I might have used wet, but now stopped using it), Egg Shells and used tea leaf as fertilizer.
Soon most of the seeds got germinated and plants were doing well and then one fine day my potato plants were destroyed by pigeons. We were shocked as they had the most beautiful leaves. So we ended up installing the net to protect our plants from birds.
Now the bird problem is not as much as before but we got a new problem, Leaves getting curled and yellow followed by insect problem and now fruiting issues. Somehow I feel now bringing the pots and soil 10 floors up was the easiest thing I did. Real Job Starts now to save and care for these babies that I have grown.
I watch a lot of you tube videos but I feel joining an expert forum like this one would help me alot to learn from various issues and also give me a chance to make some gardening buddies.
This has been my journey so far, I hope to learn and share my experience with everyone on this web site and hopefully become a better Gardner one day.
Regards
Sunny
