Lots of Seed Catalogs have arrived so there are lots of choices to order seeds to start the 2020 season.

My veggie gardening starts about March 1 when I start my pepper and tomato seeds.

Already really ready for Spring to arrive as I want to start my gardening.

Oh, yeah, I've got the itch bad, especially on days like this: sunshine, little wind and temps in the high 50s. My spring bulbs foliage is up and my asiatic and oriental lilies as well. The parsley looks great, I will harvest some today. I really want to plant lettuce and spinach, but it's a little too soon, I don't usually plant these until next month. Got to check the dates for that in the Almanac. Yes, I plant by those dates, I have for years; for me they seem to work pretty well.

It is foggy here and not sure if it is still raining. So all I can do is dream of my Spring Garden and plan.

Dillard, how do you cook those? Steamed and buttered or what?

Cauliflower. Raw with French onion dip, when I get more, they go into a casserole dish with cheese sauce and baked. Icicle radishes raw. Rutabaga. pealed, sliced and boiled with chunk bacon.

I removed all the collard greens in my container, all but one, I'm wondering if I should plant the big and tall collard green somewhere in my garden and get big collard leaves from it. I need to find a space.
Edit to say, I changed my mind. I will dump this collard green. It will attract more bigs and insects. I will keep the Swiss Chard.

My husband helped me dump my first compost bin for 2020, it's beautiful black gold. Half of it went into planting my 5 new roses, some went into planting my fig tree, cherry plum. One of my daughters notebook was completely decomposed. Only the metal binder was left.
Anyway, big yard day and I've discovered we have green tomatoes, maybe Rio Grande. No wonder I saw a lot of nice healthy blooms. So stoked!

Meanwhile, I am so craving of gardening that I took the sprouty eye sections from tonights dinner potatoes (3) and planted them in a little pot.
And, experimenting with grains - sprouting them, growing to a few inches, then to feed chickens. I bought barley and whole wheat from the Lotte market, sold as people food, to see if they sprout. If not, will visit the farm store and ask if they have grain for this. If not, I guess the natural food store will have wheat berries to sprout but expecting they'd be most $?

I bought 2 garlic bulbs from the farmers market. I intend to plant them in my garden. This is different from the garlic planted recently.

Sally, I have planted potatoes like this for years. I use a large garden trug that has around five holes punched in the bottom for drainage. I put about 6" of dirt/compost in the bottom, but the pieces of the potatoes in, and cover them with 2" of dirt. As soon as the sprouts are up about 6", I add more dirt. I keep doing this until I fill the trug. When the leaves begin to yellow, I dump the whole thing out on a tarp and harvest the baby potatoes. Not a huge harvest, but two to three meals worth and very easy to grow. I use a very large trug, at least five gallons. I keep telling myself I will build a potato tower one day, made out of a circle of chicken wire and filled with hay. You can grow a lot of potatoes that way!

Nice harvest dill. I enjoyed my collards on New Years day and I've shared two bunches with the friends and neighbors.

I tried potatoes in a bag of fall leaves, didn't work out, maybe it got ants, got too dry, etc. Not a completely thought out plan.

So nice to have veggies and growing things this time of year. Of course we have nothing here.

Never tried growing potatoes myself as I think they are so cheap to buy.

Grains for the chickens sounds interesting.

Just once I'd love to taste brand new home grown potatoes. But if they're not all THAT different from store bought I'll let it pass.
