I bought this plant in a 3 gallon pot in full bloom in mid November of '18. It bloomed all winter then stopped flowering in Spring. It stayed green all summer and Fall then it started flowering again in late November. It seems to lose its leaves when it begins to bloom. I have had several Tibouchinas over the years and they always bloomed during the warm months, what is up with this one? Photo was taken this morning.

I'd guess the cooler weather, my plant isn't in bloom right now, some leaves yellow and fall off during the colder days, even has frozen to the ground a few time. Mine is planted in the ground.

I give it a hard trimming in the spring (March usually) I think it starts getting flowers around late May or June and they can last all the way till we start getting cold nights, I had flowers on it around Thanksgiving. I had mine in a huge container for about five years and it became root bound so I put it in the ground last spring, it has looked much better since. I completely lost one over ten years ago that was pretty established when we went down to low 20's for a week long two years in a row. They do like morning or late sun and seem to prefer some dappled sun in the hot part of the day. They are zone 10a and above, but I see some really fine looking trees around here, usually up close to a house.

I had a couple in SC and they did fine, in the ground, for several years but those occasional cold years did them in. The large leafed on was the most tender. So yours blooms in the normal season. Thinking I really cannot understand why this one is a winter bloomer. I did give it a hard trimming last spring as it was the first year I had it and I thought it would fill out. Didn't happen.

You might need to put it in the ground this spring? Mine looks pretty good right now, I guess if this warm weather kept up it would start to flower, but next week going cold again.

Think I will plant mine in the ground and I'll give it a good haircut at the same time.

Mine was getting new growth but leggy, I figure with all these upper 80 degrees might as well give it a good trim. Cut back my hibiscus too.

I also cut back a hibiscus and really whacked back my Firespike yesterday, it was leggy and hanging all over the place. We are due for a few more cool days but the soil is rapidly warmng up.

Looks like Feb. 29th through Mar. 2 our next good cold blast...according to Weatherunderground.

A little hint. Go to ten day and then, click the tenth day and look at hourly, it always gives another couple days temperatures.
