Irises
Hi! I have a couple of SDB irises with no ID and I was wondering if anyone here could help? They both bloom early in the season but I forget if they have any fragrance... Any ideas on what they could be would be helpful, thank you!

Unfortunately, I am unable to identify these, but some of our other members may be able to do so.

Maybe Bonnie might have some ideas... @grannysgarden

My first guess for the purple is the iris Smart.

You really need to buy a named one and grow it side by side to be sure, but I don't know many that look like it. Bonnie might though.
I got mine from Schreiner's a long long time ago.

I thought it was smart, but I find the falls look a bit too long to be 100% sure..

Look at all the database pictures. There is quite a bit of variance. And yes, it could be something similar but not Smart. Glad to hear you are being cautious with your ID.

Yeah, although I'm not sure so far its the closest I can find for the purple one, but I have no clue for the burgundy one yet...

I have no clue what the burgandy one is, though it looks to be an older form.

I was looking in an iris database and I think I found what the purple might be, it's called "Little Episode". The pictures of it have varying shades of purple but that's probably due to the cameras.

Here's a picture of it from google:

That looks close too. You may need to purchase one or both and see which looks like yours in your garden since both potentials do vary in pictures.

There are too many differences in the pictures to make a positive ID. It's really almost impossible to do that anyway, unless it's so unique there's nothing like it anywhere. Smart has what appears to be some orange on the beard in the throat and that doesn't seem to be evident in yours. Little Episode has a dart starting from the base of the falls, and at times going all the way up to the beard, and that isn't evident in your iris. If you really love the iris, you can enjoy it without a name. But if you just want one like that with a name, you can always order one of the named varieties and discard the NOID. If you're Hell bent on getting an ID for your little one, then be ready to spend lots of time getting similar ones and growing them next to your NOID to try to ID it. It has to bloom at the same time, be the same height, the standards have to match exactly when you tear it apart, as do the falls, and style arms. It also would have the same fragrance. There are so many unregistered seedlings that just start in someone's garden from seeds that then get shared out and never named. This seems to happen more easily with the little ones. Good luck with what ever you choose to do. Smiling

Yeah I know I probably wont be able to get an ID and be 100% sure about it, it's the same for orchids there's way too many hybrids to be sure.. I just like having an idea of what they might be.
