Roses
Here is a link to the post I just read. It shows the two new roses that will be introduced at Chelsea this year. Lady Emma Hamilton--gone. Evelyn--gone. Sharifa Asma--gone. Munstead Wood--gone. The only one I feel really bad about is Munstead which has always done very well for me. Many of these roses do much better in our garden conditions than in England.

Thanks for letting us know about this Mustb! I'm not surprised about Lady Emma because it took a lot to get her going even in my relatively disease-free garden. But Munstead Wood is shocking! I thought it was a tried and true rose that did well for so many. I'm glad I have most of the roses that are gone like Evelyn, Abe, Sharifa Asma, Charles Rennie, WS2000, etc. I love these DA classics so much!

That is heartbreaking
There are still so many that I would love to grow
Munstead?? I don't get that at all
Munstead is my second favorite rose . Always in bloom and the fragrance is intoxicating.

You can't plant your new favorite rose if you are still watering your least favorite

This is crazy! I hope that nurseries will plant and propagate some of these. Even Graham Thomas is on the chopping block? Wow.

I did order Graham Thomas, Lady of Shallot, Munstead Wood this year. But if they die, I'm in trouble.

This is sad. Very sad.

It doesn't surprise me in the least.

Austin has ALWAYS pushed older varieties aside, willy-nilly, to make room for new. And remember that rose patents expire after 20 years . . .

what an interesting read, i didn't know they often pulled roses from their offering. I have Munstead Wood and while it's not always the prettiest shrub the blooms make up for it.

The new intros are not my colors but I've also not collected a ton of DA roses.

I read on gardenweb that this actually isn't true as the blogger wasn't looking them up correctly on DA's site. Many of the roses they offer, especially non-Austin roses are not in the paper catalogue either.

I know about DA removing roses from their inventory. I had one years ago that died, and when I wanted to replace it, it wasn't available anymore. The bush wasn't very disease resistant, and the blooms had weak stems, but the color, form and the fragrance more than made up for the deficiencies. The name was Guinevere.

Munstead Wood isnt surprising, its a rose that was selected purely on its bloom colour and fragrance, the rest of it is average to dud at best, with blooms its very "meh".

GT is surprising given its still highly recommened despite its age and none of the newer DA are generally recommended in its place. Its a good breeder rose with its fertility.

Lynda - I looked up Guinevere on hmf...there isn't an Austin rose listed. Do you have any pictures?

Roses
There was/is a rose that was sold and advertised back in 2001/02 as an English rose called Lady Guinevere. Jackson and Perkins marketed and sold it. It is actually a Harkness rose. Here is a link to it on HMF. Could this by your rose? Supposedly, Angel Gardens still has it.

I wish that it was the Harkness rose, but it was a DA. I still have the band somewhere. My friend and I bought one rose each, she got Graham Thomas? That tall golden yellow one, and she still has it. This was about 21 or 22 years ago.

Wow, just checked that website, forgot about using it, and I think that is indeed the rose! I did buy it from DA, but he does sell roses he did not create. @mustbnuts, thank you so much for finding this. I would, however, disagree about the disease resistance. Very susceptible to blackspot. I sure need to go back and look at that tag, it must have the Harkness name on it. My bad! Thanks once again.

On HMF I looked up breeders on the left hand side and you can go and find all of the plants that they have bread. I didn't find your rose there so I figured there must have been a mistake. It makes sense that is a Harkness Rose since he is another English breeder. I'm glad you found it. Smiling

Official word from DAR in HORTICULTURE WEEK, 1-19-2020:

David Austin Roses consolidates range

David Austin, has cut its range by 30%.

…no longer available: 'Munstead Wood', 'Lady Emma Hamilton', 'Abraham Darby', 'William Shakespeare', 'Elsie Braithwaite', 'Alan Titchmarsh' and others.

…Numbers of varieties available are now 86, down 30%, with more old varieties set to be dropped. 'Gertrude Jekyll' remains a top seller and will continue to be sold.

David Austin Roses' Kate Porter said: "We've made some significant changes to the range for the good of the customer. Some of the well-known varieties we are withdrawing from the range. What was wonderful 20 years ago, standards have changed and we've improved breeding standards."

David Austin's Paul Manley recommends new varieties such as 'Olivia Rose Austin'.
