Taken May 26, 2018. This is a portion of the bed devoted to European and American tree peonies (lutea and suffruticosa types primarily) at the Peony Garden, Nichols Arboretum, Ann Arbor, Michigan. The height of the bloom period for these tree peonies generally coincides with the first two weeks of the bloom period for the herbaceous or garden peonies.
The plants in bloom are mature. Hephestos, which is tagged, had already finished blooming. The untagged plants are ones for which no identifying tag is available, or are too young and small to have yet bloomed.
This bed is in the process of being extended and added to as part of a project to extend the Peony Garden offerings of tree peonies and intersectional hybrids. Wooden stakes in the shot mark recent plantings.
