My Epiphyllum oxypetalum: Queen of the Night (Epiphyllum oxypetalum) bloomed three nights this week and I missed it every single time, only to notice spent blooms the next day! Thumbs down Tonight I looked and no blooms on the Epiphyllum but I found two other night bloomers showing their stuff:

Ipomoea alba (Evening Glory) ............ and Cereus repandus (Apple Cactus)

very pretty. I left a moonflower in my greenhouse since our nights are too cool. It became invested with spidermites so I had to throw it out. Too bad since there were flower buds on it

Sad That is sad that you had to throw it out but you sure don't want the spider mites spreading to other plants. On a whim I bought a packet of seeds at Wal-Mart or Home Depot a couple of months ago and sowed them directly in the ground. They sprouted quickly and really took off. I will enjoy the fragrant blooms more when we get our porch screened in and can sit out in the evenings and at night without the worry of pesky mosquitoes!

Generally, the aphids get my moonflowers. I have no trouble starting them, but I swear they are aphid magnets! And I think our growing season just isn't long enough for them. I've gotten only a couple of blooms in the several years I've tried growing them here.

Woofie, that's odd ... my small Nerium oleander's are covered in aphids but the moonflowers aren't bothered by aphids at all ... and one of the Oleanders is planted near the Moonflower vine. I guess they are just liking the taste of oleander leaves.

Probably munching on the oleanders is killing off the aphids! Hilarious!

Rolling on the floor laughing I hadn't thought of that ... sure wish it was true but unfortunately they don't seem to be toxic to the durned aphids!
