Thread OP

Hello!
I have a regal shield and a few days ago it's bloom finally opened. Is this type of flower self pollinating or do I need another bloom or plant to properly pollinate it and harvest the seeds?

My plant only has one flower on it.

Thank you so much!

No, it will not self pollinate. ALocasias have imperfect flowers. The female flowers are produced on the upper part of the spadix, male on the lower. The male flowers usually make the pollen before the female flowers are open and ready for pollination.

Once the female flowers do open, they are receptive to pollination immediately, but if not pollinated within a day, they will no longer accept pollen.

Hi. Nice plant you have there. I have my first Regal Shield in transit now... which is not going so well (USPS). Plant arrived in Cali and went south instead of north like it should have done. Fingers crossed.

Hi Gina,

USPS can be a problem at times, but I'm sure I know what's going on this time. A lot of postal employee's are probably out with COVID-19 or under investigation. I work at big box store. I didn't wait for management to tell me to put on a mask, I had mine on early and advised others to do the same but nobody listens. One-by-one they started dropping like flies. We had to bring in employees from out-of-town just to keep the store open.

My Regal Shield arrived today and he don't look so good but I think he will pull through. He perked up a little since arrival. See before and after pics, bye.

Oh I think it will go, looks good for that much time in a box. I sell plants, and have a repeat customer in Ohio who buys from me frequently. I mailed him a box last month that took TEN DAYS to get there. Other boxes I mailed him before got there in 3-4 days. He took out the extra insurance because the value of the box was about $200. What we discovered in reading the 'fine print' of the USPS is that their gratis $50 in insurance does not cover perishable things, plants being specifically named. The only way to get 'real' insurance on plants is to buy the extra insurance.
