All About American Beautyberry

By wildflowers
November 25, 2016

I really look forward to fall when so many plants change into their colorful fall wardrobes; it's such a beautiful sight. The American Beautyberry is one such plant that makes quite a showing, boasting bright magenta berries that look much like bracelets of amethyst beads glistening in clusters along drooping branches.

Hi there. The beautyberries are starting to ripen here too!

I had the same problem finding a recipe back when I was looking for a recipe for Beautyberry wine! After discovering that the American Beautyberry is also-known-as a French Mullberry, I found several recipes. I haven't looked lately but you can probably find several recipes for French mullberry wine.

Here's the recipe I've been saving - I hope it helps.
I still haven't tried it but this year looks like a good time to try! It came from an old Mulberry recipe... Enjoy and good luck!!

BEAUTYBERRY (FRENCH MULLBERRY) WINE
4 lb mulberries
4 & ½ Cup sugar
1 t yeast nutrient
1 t acid blend
1 t peptic enzymes
1 campden tablet
1 pkg pasture red (or RC-212) yeast

1. Crush the fruit in the primary container & pour in all the additives and the sugar.
2. Stir together well and top up to 1 gal w/ hot water
3. Let sit and cool and the sulphate (campden) dissipate completely - about 24 hrs.
4. Then add the yeast to start the fermentation.

I also have a recipe for Elderberry wine that I'm thinking about trying with the beautyberries. Actually, since it doesn't call for all those additives, this is the one I am leaning towards trying with this years harvest. All it calls for is 3 gallons of elderberries, 1 packet of commercial wine or champagne yeast and about 10 to 12 pounds of sugar... seems easy enough! LOL

I too have been thinking about making Beautyberry wine. I went to a plant swap down in St, Cloud, Florida over the weekend and one of the participants made Beautyberry Jelly and brought it to the event. Omg! it was delicious. The berries when raw don't have much flavor but she cooked them for 2 hours on the stove and then strained them and added the sugar and pectin and they became that divine jelly. I have a juice extractor and was thinking of either extracting the juice and adding it to water and then cooking it for a bit prior to adding the cooled off juice to the carboy and combining the sugar and yeast with it. I am not fond of tart wines. I also thought of just cooking the whole berries and then cooling them down and adding the water and yeast and campden tablet to the mix in the carboy and just let it ferment.. What do you all think about these ideas?

Thank you, Bev. I'm glad you enjoyed reading the article. Beautyberries are really ripe now so the birds will be eating the berries and dropping the seeds off here and there. I'll keep an eye out for new plants popping up, which always happens. Green Grin! If you are interested in seeds, I'll be happy to collect some for you. Send me a treemail and LMK. Thumbs up
