Those flowers are really striking.

Aren't they cool? This is actually my 2nd go around with this plant. I had it in the greenhouse years ago in a different location...it got so huge, I rashly decided to remove it. Mistake. I really like it, its in a different location now. I actually saw some planted out here in someone's yard. I may put one outside in a sheltered location and see how it does.

I saw masses of them planted in HI and the flowers were just electric. Mine lived outside in SC (z 9) but it never bloomed and it did get smaller and smaller each year. I think a protected location at your place would be worth trying. Maybe under a big oak so the frost could not settle on it.

Yes when I see how large they can get in a greenhouse under perfect conditions I imagine the Hawaiian planting was pretty wondrous!

I have one that planted outside in a shady area close along the side of the house, probably almost ten years. It has tolerated some pretty cold temps over the years, gets no protection when we're cold, gets sad looking in temps down to upper 20's but has always bounced back. The flowers are pretty.

Hey I might try one outside. When we went to Total Wine today to pick up an online order, there was a lady next door at Lowes loading her car with about 100 plants. One was a triostar LOL

Well, we have all this time to plant but planting during a drought can be a challenge. We may have some rain tonight but it will only be a brief respite - if at all. Sighing!

i've seen it in ground very large, under a small tree and blooming in Leu gardens, Orlando.
i've had one (grew to 4 in sev years) indoors for many years. it's a great plant..indoors or out! but hard to combine with anything else: it's steals all the attention :).
