I have these wildflowers growing in my backyard, the flower looks like a variety of violet to me, but the leaves don't look like the more heart shaped ones I usually see with other violets. I have attached pictures. I live in North Carolina in the Piedmont area, zone 7b, the soil is very much red clay.

If anyone can give me more specifics on the flower that would be great! I know violets are edible and would like to use these for eating as well if I could.
