I wonder if forum members can suggest some good sources for trying to identify my irises based upon their characteristics. This garden.org website is good but has a limited number of irises with photos. Many I have that are already tagged, for instance, are not included in this database. I'm new to this forum and growing irises in general, so any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, Daphne, I have tried it but I may have to look more deeply at it. It seemed to me that you mostly needed to know the name of the iris and then click on it as they were in an alphabetical format. I was sort of looking for something like a botanical tree where you went step by step through the features of the specimen, like beard color, standard color, etc to lead you to potential candidates. Then at least one could search for the name and get photos to help verify or eliminate.

You can do that Louise...
Go to the Plants Database at the menu bar on top.
Then go to "Visit our plant-specific databases:" (Do not select "search all plants by characteristics"
Select Irises
Search by characteristics

I've found that selecting fewer choices yields better results.. also, one hybridize4r may see a color as "purple", while another may see that same color as "violet".. You just have to keep trying different choices... Sometimes I'll go to a similar Iris just to see how it is described, and start from there... Also search the Children and parents can sometime give success.. Good luck

The Historic Iris Preservation Society is great for searching historic irises. If you click on "Gallery" then "Photo Gallery" you can search for irises by several criteria including the colour of the standards, falls and beards.
