I'm pretty new to irises. I'm seeing one iris rhizome with two bloom stalks. Is this normal for iris? In daylilies we'd call this instant rebloom. Is there such a thing in irises? Here's some pictures:

i my experience it happens infrequently to my irises. it usually happens in my gardens when the weather has played a part in stressing the plants. i don't know if anyone else has had the 'multiple thing' with weather stress such as too much rain, too much heat, too much etc. lol

Hmm, I'm not sure the irises have been stressed. That one bloomed last Fall. We had a very mild winter and it added a lot more rhizomes. We had no late frosts this Spring and plenty of rain. I'd have thought it would be happy in those conditions.

Do you think it will hurt the iris? Should I give it extra fertilizer after blooming? I'm actually going to dig it up this year to divide it since it's growing into my neighbor's yard and they have AstroTurf!

Could the little bloom stalk could be a branch off the main stalk?. The stalk may have a bit more growing to do.

If it's crowded and needs dividing, that could be what's causing the stress.

I had Mesmerizer do that one year for no good reason I can think of.

I'll have to check the flower stalk in a couple of days to see if it is attached to the main one. I don't want to poke around too much as I've been known to break things.

I planted my first bearded iris in 2018. I can't believe they already need dividing! My iris grow like weeds compared to my daylilies. Last year they grew a little bit but this year they've really taken off! If they keep growing at this rate I'm going to have to find more people to give them away to.

I purchased 6 iris from alilyfan in 2018. I haven't put them in my list because most haven't bloomed yet. But yesterday Baby Blessed opened. Four more will bloom soon. The other that bloomed last Spring is a blue NOID. And I can't remember the name of the one that I'm asking about. I'll post pictures of it when it blooms.

I think I'm going to order some more SDBs this year. I saw some really nice ones on the Stout website. I may wait on the TBs as most of the ones I wanted were sold out. I have a very small garden and I already grow an alarming number of daylilies so I don't have a whole lot of room left. So the little ones are probably my best bet.

I've had that happen on a few occasions.


The only time it posed a problem was from a single large rhizome of Serena Louisa. It put up multiple stalks from that rhizome and exhausted itself. (I'll see if I can find that photo) So it never produced any increases and eventually dried up and died.

UndertheSun, that is amazing! I wouldn't have thought that was possible. But even if my rhizome doesn't make any increases there are lots of other ones.

I'm still getting used to how iris bloom. Last year I would have sworn each flower stalk had 1-2 blooms but it seemed like they'd kept developing new buds. Maybe I just wasn't as observant as I should have been. I've promised myself I'd pay more attention this year. And take lots of pictures!

I'll be giving away a large portion of my daylilies to make room for my irises, still sitting in pots! Some even have bloom stalks on them!

I'm a bit hesitant to get too into irises with the dreaded iris borer on this coast. I garden organically and just don't have the time to get into a regimen of spraying. Not a lot of people grow irises in my neighborhood but the number is growing. I don't want to do anything to encourage the pests and have my neighbors hate me!
