I think finding the right size and shape polished rocks would be the hardest part.

A very difficult part is weight distribution, balance, and having some kind of support system to hold it in place as each rock dried on to the other. I think it would work with any kind of flat rocks, though the polished roundness is pretty. I just don't know what adhesive would be best. It would be great to have a permanent weatherproof fast drying adhesive, but I don't know of one.

I tried a version of it with small rocks; that's how I know of those particular problems. You have to prop it up as you build it and E6000 and the silicones don't dry very quickly.

You could lay each rock on its side on a flat surface and build it horizontally, then upright it when dry, but it would have to be anchored into a substantial base to stand upright, otherwise the weight would have to all be in the bottom.

Ask me how I know all this. Ugh.

Sharon, you left a lot of space to write in. Love the rock sculpture, waiting for someone to try it first and what you used to glue them together. Finding the right rocks would be the hardest. Another project to add the the ever growing list.

It was a nice Christmas for our families. So much sadness and sorrows in 2012 for a lot, but hoping 2013 will bring peace, happiness and health to all. No New Year's resolutions for me as I couldn't keep them any way. Now I can start thinking about new garden sculptures hoping to create.

There is not way those are glued together - too much weight - my guess is that there are holes drilled into the stone and metal poles inserted, then possibly glued for additional support. By choosing the right contoured stone the metal pole would be invisible.

The picture attached are three decorative stone cairns I built, each stone has a drill hole through it and a 1/2" threaded aluminum rod going up through them. The stones are supported with a large cobblestone base (that also has a hole drilled through it) and under that are some washers and a nut to keep them at the right height, that are buried in the ground. The aluminum rod is 5' tall and the cairns are 4', 3.5', and 3' tall. The extra lenght is in the ground for more support.

That is a nice project that I will attempt to tackle with the supply of beach stone I have collected for stone art that catches my eye. It looks like the stone as been painted with a clear acrylic, not keen on that look. It is 15 degrees out there so it will have to wait till it warms up a bit.

Bill, I love your cairns! I think they look better than the featured more abstract piece (just my personal preference, not at all dissing on the first one which is very cool in its own way). What kind of drill/bit did you use for the drilling? I use a lot of rock in my landscape in different ways, might some day give this a whirl.

I agree they had to have some structure connecting them, I love the cairns. That drilling must have been a bear...
