Bill, looking at your beautiful artwork reminded me of our random discovery. It was such a magical moment for my husband and I - we were up in a BC provincial park taking a hike to the river, and when we came down out of the woods onto the river bank, there were rock stacks literally everywhere. And it was so nice to see that fellow hikers were all very respectful and left them all standing, likely adding their own creations to the mix. Very cool. I believe this was in 2008 or thereabouts, no clue what park it was. We started out on a road trip heading north on the Al-Can highway, but took a right at Prince George and over to Wells Gray, then looped back to the Sky-to-Sea highway. It was very beautiful - we refer to it as our waterfall trip. The best plan is sometimes no-plan.
I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.

nice tale - my MIL and I watched a man walk his dog past the cairns and waited to see his reaction - he never noticed them - he even turned and walked past them again and never lifted his head - it was kinda funny.

Thought I would jump in here and post a few more of the rock balances I've making this winter. every stone has a story. The base of the first "followed" me home from Colorado, the base of the second and third found there way into my car from Maine.

Rock on........

I love all the photos of cairns. As long as mankind has desired to communicate with each other stone cairns have been used to do so. In this country Native Americans and early settlers used cairns to denote which trail to take, the steepness of the trail ahead, danger ahead, etc. The height of the stones as well as how many small cairns were used and in what direction they were lined up all indicated vital information. I find them fascinating and I think they speak to all of us in more ways than just art......

Thank you for posting pictures, sharing your art and how you created it. smiles

The last cairn with the long rock sticking out, looks like a handle & urges one to pull it back & forth to wind it up. Whistling

I can only guess he is not completely blind, just greatly impaired. Otherwise how wood he cut those holes?
But I do wonder how he gets the things home. Surely not one by one on his bike. Hilarious!

Some people do remarkable things, I just wish I had the gumption to do half of what they do with their "disabilities."
