Hello all! As a result of having a rainwater harvesting system installed I decided to turn part of the water retention berms into raised bed gardens and now have a "Victory Garden" in my front yard. I'm only in my second year so I am still in the learning experience phase. Right now I am finding that something is cutting leaves off of my Bell Peppers. I was out looking last night and saw some beetles that look a bit like Agave Weevils in the bed but not on the plants . Whatever is doing this is cutting the leaves whole. It isn't harvester ants. So I would appreciate any speculation, outright guesses, or thoughts on what is doing this and how I can stop it.
Thanks!

Edit: I'm in Tucson, AZ

Hi Finfan

I am in Tucson as well. When leaves disappear from my potted flowers it is Pack Rats doing it. Hopefully that is not your issue. Crying
Gina is the vegetable gardening expert on this site. Bet she will have some thoughts on your leaf issue.

Hi FinFan,

I'm late the the conversation... did you ever find the cause of your bell pepper leaf issue? My first thought was the hornworm. But if it was the hornworm, you'd certainly know by now.

The leaf cutter bees do a number on my roses each year. They don't take the whole leaf but rather cut a semi-circle out of each leaf. It's only seasonal and it doesn't harm the Rose.

The only beetles I find around here (zone 9a, 3500' elevation) are large and remind me more of a cockroach than a garden beetle. Never in my garden bed, though. The chickens loved to eat them as they huddled under their water basin in the coop.

And, like Linda mentioned, those pack rats and ground squirrels are a real threat to just about everything.

I had tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers in my garden my first year and the hornworm completely decimated all of them. I don't plant any nightshade in the main bed anymore.

It's trial and error for the first few years, so keep going!! You're doing great!

This year the leaf cutters have really messed up one particular rose bush of mine, Gina.

Sorry to hear about your roses, Linda. They got mine pretty good, too. Every year. Thumbs down
