Anyone growing Amydriums? I love them. There are only 5 plants in the entire genus, which is a group of terrestrial liane aroids. Liane plants are tropical plants that have long stems and a scandent habit, rooted in soil as terrestrials, which climb and twine on other plants. Not limited to aroids they also include many vines and creepers (the Green Jade Vine, Strongolydon macrobotrys, is an example of a tropical liana as well)
The presence of liane plants in a forest are what differentiate the tropical from the temperate forest.

Amydriums were first described in 1968 when there were 4 species placed into the genus: A. medium, A. zippelianum, A. magnificum, and A. humile. All came from SE Asia and So. China, Java, Sumatra and New Guinea.

Since that time, A. magnificum has been merged as a synonym to the accepted name, A> zippelianum, while 2 new species have been found in Viet Nam: A. hainense and A. sinense. So there are 5 known described species.

The most commonly available (but still hard to find) is Amydrium zippelianum (aka magnificum). A. medium is also available but mainly through serious collectors.

This is Amydrium zippelianum, a deeply incised pinnate leaf makes it easy to identify. This one has rooted to the honeycomb in the cooling pad of my greenhouse.

Amydrium medium looks completely different...large broad leaves with a bullate looking surface, both pinnation and fenestration present. I recently received this plant in a trade and it is rooted and still getting acclimated to the greenhouse

I am not growing any, but those are some cool looking plants! Especially the first photo. I'm not even sure where one might find any of these plants. I haven't seen them anywhere.

They tend to be hard to find. I am trying to propagate a few runners but they take forever. The one I put in my terrarium sat there for almost a year before it started growing now its growing really quick. I will eventually have to take it out of there

I grow Zippelianum, Medium and Humile

This one is a green form of Medium

a silver form of medium, they rarely show fenestration, most of time only splits

a Humile, it has perfectly heart-shape thick and glossy leaves, no split, no holes

There are variegated form circulated in the market of Zippelianum and Medium (both silver and green form), but too expensive now for me... need to be patient for now

Thanks Adrienne, the A humile grow wild on the woods, some have bluish metallic shine, I wish I encounter a mutant form, a variegated may be... but the chance of finding mutant in the wild is pretty thin. it is the only Amydrium that could flowers without climbing to a tree that I know of, and they are popular with bugs

I hate it when my favorite plants are popular with me AND bugs!

Humile is pretty uncommon here. I have never seen one in person only photos.

Crazy how some plants are coming out our ears (yet still labeled 'rare rare rare' by sellers) and others, it's like they don't exist! Impossible to find.

Actually Humile was never popular in my country too, it is the aroid crave that brings this one out of the woods..... but I really think it deserve to be in garden, it so waxy in person. I am sorry my picture is bad, I never really tend my plants well, I love it growing with bugs in my junglish garden...
and I don't have good camera, just this poor camera, (I prefer buying new plants rather than a camera... )
The flowers looks like a tiny monstera flowers. inconspicuous only 3cm long, with white unattractive spathe. I had a picture somewhere but could've find it. may be next time if I go to the woods, the woods is my property I went there some time if I need bamboo shoots for cooking... and bugs is not the only things there, there are lots of monkeys, snake and huge monitor lizards, and sure butterfly if you hate bugs

I don't mind the butterflies. I'm not sure what I'd do if I saw a giant lizard, snake or a monkey. The only thing we'd see here is maybe a deer. Probably a bunch of squirrels. I think it's really cool that you can go collect bamboo shoots in your back yard and at the same time, see lots of amazing plants!

Sumatera is one of the places that many rare plants have been discovered by botanists out in the woods and ultimately described to science. That is the stomping grounds for a few right now who are collecting and studying the true Pothos among other things.

I always wonder what you mean when you say the true pothos. Has it been identified but it's still out there in the wild doing its pothos thing?

The true Pothos is the plants that actually belong in the genus, Pothos. One of the banes of horticulture is that Epipremnum aureum was originally believed to belong in the genus Pothos. Even though it was removed from Pothos and placed in Epipremnum, the damage was done and now all of the Neons, Marble Queens, Jade and Pearls and other cultivars on E. aureum are referred to under the general title 'Pothos'.

Its kind of like the Alocasia Poly and the Amazonia tag.

True pothos plants are rainforest plants that are really not that much to look at, there are a few that are kind of neat, but none have ever been considered widely marketable enough for the plant trade for someone to import them and try to produce them on a large scale. A few are popular with terrarium peeps and they will pay BIG BUCKS for tiny specimens.

They really aren't nothing much to look at LOL probably why they are not hot items here on a daily basis. I did see one come up on a Terrarium auction site the other day, the STARTING BID was $90.

The Zipp seems almost indestructible... and I 100% love that... it was lost in the mail for weeks and pretty much arrived looking exquisite! I'll get some photos tomorrow... if u can't tell, I do love them generally!
