Hy hemaholics


Have you ever seen this or had buds like this , a friend of me has it on several daylilys
On the foto he has cut the bud open so you can see the inside
Above on the bud there is a super tiny hole

I thougt gall midge , aldo than the buds are more ugly with knobs and so
He says it's not the gall midge , that he knows and seen before every year

Maybe some of you have seen this before and can help solve this problem

Hi Johan,
Perhaps the extreme weather conditions of recent months have played a role here, we had a very mild winter here in Belgium with hardly any frost followed by many freezing nights in the spring and on top of that the drought period that has been going on for months now.
I don't think these are ideal conditions for our daylilies.
It could of course also be an insect that infects the bud, however gall midge damage looks different in my opinion.
You can spray with a systemic insecticide such as Movento, but the damaged buds will unfortunately not recover.

Thrips would be the problem
I love the winters here at the moment, mild frost

I agree it does not look like most gall midge damage, but if you look at this picture by Francois Verhaert from the AHS Daylily Dictionary, the bud on the right has similar "cupped" sepals and the one above it has opened prematurely when still small:

What I was wondering is whether the bud had only maybe one maggot in it, enough to do some damage but be hard to find (if it's even still there).

Thrips are so ubiquitous on daylilies (here in North America anyway) that I'd be surprised if they produced something different from what you've seen before - always possible though.

It might actually help to show a picture of damaged buds on the scape in the garden to get an overall idea of what the problem looks like. There are other pest possibilities, like capsid bugs (as they are called in the UK at least). Is there thrips damage to the leaves?

Thrips i gues , my friend has seen when he opened one bud that there was a tiny insect trying to escape , but i could not fly ( thrips )

On the other hand mybe the long warm spell without rain .....
