Any suggestions for a simple project for this little area in the back of the house.

You could put a bird bath there, a bubbling fountain would really look nice there. If you do either you could leave the gravel as is. Or you could dig out the gravel and put in some hostas around it.

I don't know what the soil is like - but you can amend it to suit your choice of plants.
That's not a great view of the house, what I can see of it; could use a splash of colour and some texture to soften that corner. In a sunny spot, I'd say, hollyhocks, but that looks a quite shady area. Big tree, of just the wrong time of day?
If it's in shade most of the time, hostas do sound like a good suggestion: they grow big and lush and the foliage comes in lots of interesting variations. They tend to fill in all available space; hard to companion with anything more timid, and their architecture is limited. There are softer-looking leafy plants, not so big and easier to mix.
Another strong possibility is ferns - but I'd put something taller and colourful behind them by the wall. Astilbes? Foxglove? Hydrangea? Could be a plant-stand with a pot of annuals on it - different every year, or a hanging basket above, or even a narrow trellis with, say, climbing hydrangea, sweet pea or bleeding heart?
The possibilities!
Behind every opportunity is a disaster in waiting.
