Hi Linda,
Great pictures of that Fox,..a different type of Fox than the ones we have here,..ours are only red.

I used to live on a Victorian Estate where there was 60 acres of land,..quite a lot of this was wooded and there were Badgers and Foxes aplenty,..one day while taking a break i spotted some Fox Cubs very close to where i was sitting so each day i would return to the same spot and throw around some dried dog pet food pellets,..when i arrived i would make a kissing sound,..after a week of this one of the Cubs would come within a few feet of me and eat away not in the least scared of me,..he and i got used to each other for the next year or more,..there was no shooting allowed on the 60 acres and he is still there.

The pictures were taken with an old camera i then carried,..not digital.

Philip he's a beauty. Yes, your foxes are the ones always pictured in our childhood story books. The red foxes we have in the US can look quite different than yours and are sometimes not even red. They can often be confused with the grey fox. The only surefire way to tell is to look at the tip of the tail. Our red fox will have a white tipped tail.

"Red foxes are often confused with gray foxes, which share a similar habitat and range. This can make identification difficult, because some red foxes can large patches of gray fur and gray foxes have patches of red fur. Gray foxes are somewhat smaller and have a slightly more-rounded face and shorter snout.

The surefire way to tell the difference is to look for the color at the tip of the tail. Gray foxes have black-tipped tails, while red fox tails are white. Although they are very similar in name and appearance, the gray fox and the red fox are only distant cousins, belonging to different genera in the family Canidae."

Around here and I mean directly in our neighborhood we have red foxes. One lives around the corner in the wooded hill that is in back of a friends house. I see them in the park during the day hunting squirrels.

Well the animals of the country are coming more and more into the city and urban areas. More and more news stories here about the coyotes that are becoming more and more common here all around the NYC area.

News story last night about how the coyotes are not only around but not afraid of people at all and getting more brazen. One lady was interviewed and she told how a coyote came to her back door patio and snatched her dog while she was there. Fortunately she saved her dog by scaring away the coyote and dog was stitched up by the vet and fully recovered.

I like wildlife but not the kind that eats our pets! Crying

She took pictures of it on her phone and was showing them to me today. The fox was curled up in a ball sleeping in back of her patio. He is often there and it is wooded back there.

Racoons and grey squirrels have been doing better than ever in Surburbia. NJ is fairly populated but has plenty of bears. Now it seems the Coyotes have figured out city areas are a great source of prey and moving in to take advantage.

Deb, I always laugh when I hear someone say that because it just doesn't quite fit.

Yup, we had cougars, bears, skunks, fox, coyotes, deer, etc., living here when the town was settled in the 1850s. We still have them, BUT there are fewer people living up here now than during the gold rush days.

We just don't think of these critters as town critters .. Smiling

Animals like Racoons and grey squirrel do better than ever in our Urban and Suburban environments as they have learned to adapt.

Even those Red Foxes living around the neighborhood here are pretty much used to people. They will not come really near but are plenty used to seeing people.

This baby snake is about 16", and was at our front door this AM. I'm concerned it might be a rattlesnake. Unfortunately, dean smashed the head, so we cant tell. Anyone familiar with baby rattlesnakes?

Thumbs down That's a good way to get bit! Kill every snake you want... The eggs will still disappear... Then the fruits too... Cute fuzzy little "friendly" critters will do 100x the damage to your garden than any snake will, and unless your doing something like trying to kill the snake, chances are you'll get struck by lightning before you get stuck by a snake...

I agree, I only kill those that are poisonous, or eating our "things". Dean, however hates snakes, and if I'm not there to say " leave it alone" its a dead snake.

No rattles or buttons on it that I can see. Looks like a rat snake -- maybe black rat snake to me.

Yup, just a black rat snake...

They should be your friend, not enemy, they're even known to eat rattlesnakes, their cousins king snakes, which you have in your area, eat other snakes exclusively!
