I have a large flowering clematis that looks entirely dead most of the year and blooms nice each spring. So tired of messing with it. It's right by my front door.
Is there a list somewhere of varieties that are less prone to wilt? I don't care if it is the large flower kind or not, just something that won't look dead next to my door! I do need something bluish colored though.

Clematis 'H.F. Young'

This is the one I currently have, I love the color and want to find something similar in color that doesn't look dead all year. Is there any hope of saving mine or will the wilt just happen every year? It only looks nice for about 5 minutes each spring. It pretty much happens every year. Then when I try to cut the affected parts out, I end up breaking others and it's just a tangled up mess. Seems like I either have to cut the whole thing off to the ground because I can't just take out the affected parts without tearing up the rest.

How old is your clematis? Usually it happens with young plants. Are you sure it is the wilt? Sometimes some creatures can damage the stems and they wilt. In my case slug do that. They damage the surface of the stem. When the shoots are young everything looks good but when it is time for bigger work - they collapse. If you really want to replace H.F.Young try something from viticella group (they are wilt free): Blue Andel, Emilia Platter, Perle d'Azure, Prince Charles, Justa. There are so many new varieties with viticella genes which are not susceptible to wilt and have pretty large flowers. I love Vancouver Sea Breeze. Actually most clematises from group 3 have viticella blood and supposed to be wilt resistant.

I have had mine for 3 years now I think this may be it's 4th summer. It dies every year so that it looks basically dead. It always dies off just as it blooms nice. The blooms are huge and are a clear pretty bluish color, but I am tired of it always looking dead.
