I've always wondered how long anyone else has kept their Pothos going.

I have had mine since at least 1997 which makes it 23 years old. 1997 is the last year I can find it in a picture but there's a chance that I've had it for longer.

It has been moved from a humid climate to a very dry climate, neglected often, never fed, left to dry out, RARELY repotted and yet it keeps on.

This is how it stands today. A couple of months ago I reaffirmed my commitment to it, pulled out ropes of old vines, and took it back to two lonely sprigs.

I love/hate this thing.

p.s. from what I understand the Pothos has not been seen with a flower for decades (anywhere) and has survived solely by being propagated from cuttings.

Well its not really a Pothos which is why it does not flower. It is an Epipremnum. The true Pothos, which are a genus of rainforest plants, routinely flower. This is Epipremnum aureum, which unfortunately was included in the genus Pothos for a short time before it was moved into its appropriate genus Epipremnum, but it was long enough for the horticultural industry to label it a pothos and it is forever stuck in people's heads that this plant is a pothos. Its a common name, erroneous.

You are correct, now that we know the variety people grow as houseplants is actually an immature stage of the plant it has found its home as Epipremnum aureoum.

Given that the plant hasn't reached a sufficient level of maturity it makes sense that we would never see the houseplant flower.

Still curious how long folks have had one. I suspect more get thrown out not because they die but because the owners just get tired of them.

I have never grown one as a houseplant. I have them growing up a couple of trees, and some in my greenhouse just run wild and climb wherever they like. The really mature ones, they probably bloom but to tell the truth I have never noticed. It doesn;t take them too long to reach maturity if you let them climb. They are positive phototropes and grow toward the light, getting larger and larger leaves as they climb. Then they pinnate.
Here is a mature one, this one is just the plain old yellow and green variegated

and this one is just plain green.

Also it is with noting that ALL of the cultivars (NJoy, Marble Queen, Pearls and Jade, Neon etc) will exhibit this large leaf/pinnate form if allowed to climb. Enjoy is particularly attractive.

I got one for my classroom when I started teaching. It's now been 11 years and 3 schools. It's gone months without sunlight (had a few classrooms without windows), who knows how long without water. This spring I finally took it out of its pot and have half growing out of my fish tank and the other half in water in a jar. Maybe I'll get that part potted back up one of these days.
