Two plants right by my front door were munched on.
I have noticed a few fawns in the neighborhood and they seem to be oblivious enough to get through some of my precautions. Whoever munched on scapes right up by the house had to have gotten a mouthful of the foul stuff I spray on my plants.

DH got me a Orbit Yard Enforcer that I use in the backyard and I have heard it go off a couple of times. It was successful at least once because I saw hoof prints in the soil running away from the device. Nothing has been touched back there — yet.

Your young deer may have learned from getting a mouthful of something yucky. I find the young ones try things, then don't keep it up if the taste or texture doesn't suit them. I had one bite off a scape that was sprayed with Bobbex, but it spat it out. I didn't have my scapes bothered again. Another time a young deer ate quite a bit of milkweed which is toxic. The milkweed hasn't been chewed on since.

I would keep up your spraying and hope the fawns learn. Deer are a challenge.

I will be curious to see how your Orbit Yard Enforcer works out. It sounds interesting.

That is my hope Valerie— that the youngster learned a lesson. Fortunately only two plants were munched and at least half of the scapes on one were spared. I have one of my club foster plants (Sea of Glass) right next to the munch zone and I am grateful that it wasn't eaten. I really want to enjoy the second year blooms on that one.

Edit to add that the yard enforcer was recommended to me by Davi and I figure she knows what she is talking about.

I hate deer too. They wiped out a whole section of my side yard garden. Make sure you reapply the spray after every rain and every two weeks, if it is dry. I haven't had any more eaten, but I need to spray again tonight.

I have been spraying on a regular basis, too, every few days, because new scapes are popping up, and I want to make sure I keep up.

I feel your pain. I lost all the buds on all the scapes of 'Always Afternoon' overnight right next to the front porch A few hosta leaves also disappeared around the same time.

It's so maddening!!!!! I've had at least 20 hostas eaten almost completely (just leaving the stem). A few daylily buds. Many lily buds (many, many). Almost every patch of phlox. And three out of four asters. The phlox and asters may still bloom but will be about 2 feet shorter.

I've used the Orbitz Yard Enforcer for going on 5 or 6 years now. Love it! There's one for the front garden and one out back for the sdlg beds. I'd go broke buying spray never mind the time it takes every 2 weeks or after rain. All I have to do is remember to turn the dial in the evening and make sure the outdoor faucet is on. The deer hate them! Me too.... if I forget to turn it off before heading into the garden. The motion sensor is sensitive and once it picks you up you get nailed.
One thing I do is fill a extra large flower pot with dirt and place the Orbitz in the pot. It raises the sensor above the leaf level so the deer can't sneak in behind taller plants. This also works on squirrels in blueberry bushes, adjusting for lower height on the sensor.

Clever idea about raising the yard enforcer with a pot, Char! I too have gotten nailed by the device and that stream of water just swivels and follows you as you run away. Very clever device!

So right Jill! We've learned the hard way. You hear the "click" and know you've been had. Coffee doesn't stay in the mug very well when you are running.
The other thing that makes them so good is they are totally adjustable. You can guard a narrow section or almost a full circle and with 30ft reach that's an area 60ft side to side. Day, night or always. I don't own any part of the company, this is just one of the best things I've purchased for the garden. I can sleep at night and not have to run out every time one of our property motion sensors goes off. We won't think about the night I ran down into the garden only to step around a tall phlox right into the face of a skunk. Glad it was his face and not the other end!

I had deer completely destroy the left side of my lower seedling bed. Eating about 40 seedlings in just one night last month and I just scared 2 off about an hour ago from that same area. They get us every year and are completely fearless to dogs and humans. I had hoped to get a fence up this past spring but things didn't work out. The liquid fence sprays didn't work for us neither did hair, soap, or Milorganite. The Milorganite does however do a great job of running off the mother-in-law

I looked out my front window a few minutes ago to see two deer standing in the middle of the road staring up at my daylilies. How brazen can a deer be to walk on a Baltimore street in the middle of the day.

I ran out and told them I was a carnivore (a lie) and they seemed to believe me enough the amble off.

I hate deer.

Amazing, Jill. I regularly see them around my garden, but I am rural. I would think you would not have them in Baltimore!

Last year I had them eat a bunch of mine first time in 30+ years. They did nibble an occasional hosta but I thought that was an ok compromise. So since they broke the truce, I bought Deer Off, sprayed and they didn't come back for more. This year I finished that off and now bought Deer Out, which is supposed to last longer even through a rain. So far so good and it smells pepperminty (sort of) so not so bad having to spray around. Saw a couple fawns playing in the back yard the other day so maybe it is time to respray to make sure. They are so darn cute when they are little

I had about 30 tillable acres that I converted to the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). Now that 30 acres has wildflowers and grass for butterflies and pheasant. And deer:) My house (and gardens) are basically in the middle of the 30 acre reserve. My back yard is about one acre and fenced, so I usually do not have any deer problems. The front yard is not fenced and I do get deer visitors. Mostly for an apple tree that they like.

On any given night, I can scan my reserve with a flashlight and see many deer eyes staring in. I believe they sleep in the field. I do not hunt, but I do look forward to deer hunting season. Like many areas, we do have a deer population problem.

If you have a small area that you want to protect, solar powered motion sense LED lights do a good job. These are set up so that they can be moved to different locations.

Larry do the lights work? I have a few I could use, but I am thinking the deer might say "Thank you, I like to see what I'm eating"

Marcia I have not bad deer damage since I started using them. I see deer tracks but the leave without snacking. Having multiple lights may help.
