I planted Last Flight Out in late Sept. of 2019. I received it as a bare root plant and potted it up for a week or two before planting it. I got the first bloom today and was surprised to see that it is practically laying on the ground. The stem (can't really even call it a scape!) is only about 2 inches long. I figure this is an anomaly but wanted to see if other folks have experienced this with other daylilies.

It may just be under stress,give it another year and it may have normal scape.

I have some plants that have a fan with a normal height scape, and a fan with a 4 inch scape on the same plant. I have several like this. We are in a drought situation and just had a record setting heat wave, so I believe it is stress related. We also had an usual spring with record setting cold. So, it has been an unusual season, so far, to say the least.

Hey Nancy, It's not uncommon for first year plants to either not bloom at all or just send up a short scape with one or two buds on them. I call them "test scapes" because all they are good for is making sure you were sent the right cultivar.

I'm sure there are dozens of factors for this. Maybe you didn't get a particularly mature fan(s) from your seller. Maybe the seller was from a different zone and the change in zones added stress. If I'm not mistaken, we had cold and snow around October 15 last fall, so that would be pretty harsh for a plant that only had two weeks or so to settle in.

I'm sure it will be better next year and almost perfect year three.
