Is this Tomato splitting**

Is this what the splitting looks like or is this something different? I kinda looks like a narrow gouge.

Yes, that's a split. Usually caused by uneven watering. Temperature extremes can do it, too. Tomatoes like to be kept evenly moist, so if the soil gets dry and then it rains heavily, they plump up too quickly and split. Or if you keep letting the plants dry too much between waterings.

They are still perfectly edible. Just cut off the split part. However, the splits also make the tomato vulnerable to insects and nasties like fungus and bacteria, which can eventually damage or destroy it. I had a lot of trouble with splitting earlier this year because I grew my tomatoes in pots and didn't regulate the watering properly when the weather heated up. I just kept an eye on them and as long as it didn't look like there was anything amiss, I left them on the vine. I picked a couple early (red, but not quite fully ripe) because the splits were getting big and I wasn't willing to take the chance of losing them. Your tomato is still pretty green and that split isn't very big, so leave it. Just keep watch for changes in its appearance.

Thank you so much. I am still trying to get a feel for watering. I thought that would be the easiest part! Is there a meter I can buy?

Yeah, watering can be tricky, especially when the weather changes suddenly or in high temps. Try to keep on a schedule as long as the temperatures are relatively steady. A good drink, but don't flood. Avoid shallow waterings. You don't say where you are or what your growing conditions are, so I can't advise frequency.

I don't use water meters, but I think they're readily found at any nursery, big box garden center, or online. Maybe others can recommend one.

I am smack dab in the middle of Kansas. This week has been a bit wet with rain most nights. The native soil is slow draining so I tried backing off. I went a whole week without watering then watered THEN it rains two nights in a row.

Oy. In the future, maybe install a raised bed with better drainage? Doesn't help you this year. Keep an eye on the splits.

I haven't had one fully ripen without splitting yet. The temp was over 90 every day and over 70 every night for quite some time so they paused for awhile. Now we have a week and a half of overcast and rain. ALL of the ripes are splitting!!!

Yeah, Mine, too. We finally got monsoons after weeks of hot and dry. Let's call a tomato pro who knows more than I do.

@Gardenfish -- Lynda, any way to stop splitting when you're at the mercy of rains?

There is really nothing you can do about that, some varieties split more than others.
Fast growing due to the weather is some thing tomato growers just have to adjust to.

Two years ago my one purple heirloom grew , ripened and mostly split so fast I just let some lay or tossed in the compost heap as split tomatoes bring fruit flies and I got tired of them buzzing around the kitchen, while at the same time we could only eat /use to many in a week.
