I entertained the idea of growing one years ago when I had my ill-fated endeavor into growing Protea in Florida LOL. (Complete futile disaster). This tree is supposedly hardy to zone 9. Its commonly planted as a street tree in places like Santa Barbara CA. I have only ever seen seeds available before but a nursery in Myakka (Snyder and Sons) has 3 year old trees available for $25. They supposedly bloom at 5-7 years, and are able to be restrained in a container if need be.

I wanted to add it to my cool tree collection LOL. 2 Brownea, a Fernandoa, a Maniltoa and this really neat Bauhinia pictured below. I have so far gotten blooms on one of my Brownea.

Oooh, I'd never heard of Firewheel Tree (Stenocarpus sinuatus) but I sure love those leaves!!! Gina, you are a true collector and you sure do have some gorgeous and unusual plants!

I have the 2 Brownea planted in the ground, one has a Philo Hastatum on it. All the others (Maniltoa, Fernandoa, Bauhinia madagascarensis) are containerized. I also have a Princess Earring tree that has a an Anthurium polystichum growing on it and I have put aroids to climbing on almost all of my oldest plumeria. I have the 2 big Bauhinias (regular old blakeana of something common) that all have aroids and bromeliads mounted to them. Everything alive that I can stick something on, I have LOL

Adam gives it a thumbs up..notes that the pics showing full flower coverage may be misleading here in Florida.

Thanks! Its being delivered today. Even though I have gotten one of my browneas to bloom (and I am not sure exactly which species it is, I got it in a trade about 15 years ago from someone in your neck of the woods as grandiceps, but the flowers on a few species look remarkably similar) it is a shy bloomer. Its a real water hog too.

I think that the may be as close as I can get up here in the steamboat humidity to grow one of the Protea related plants

I got my Firewheel! It is so nice. I can;t believe it was only $25. It has a beautiful new flush of growth on top. 2-3 years til blooms.

I have bought a few things from this nursery before and everything has been top quality and their packing is beyond professional.

I've never seen on, even down south FL. Hope you get a bloom, there pretty interesting.
