Hi folks.
This guy (probably gal) showed up on my garden path yesterday. She was just sitting there between me and my hose. She didn't move and I didn't want to scare her, but she just sat their eyeing me. She seemed a little distressed and I was thinking about what I could do for her (not much). Finally, I inched by her and she flew away, but not before I took this picture. Is she a female norther flicker. I checked with Cornell's Merlin app and that seems to be right. David
Yes, definitely a flicker....might be an immature, that's why she's so tame.....they love to nest in hollow trees, had them in my old pear tree once......
I think you may be immature, though she's not a small thing. I did have a couple of nests in a rather large Rugosa Rose this spring. Every summer, I have lots of little birds flittering through my garden in a busy city park on Eleventh Avenue in NYC. It gives me
a lot of joy. I'm always surprised that they allow me to walk past them or they just hop
down the path in front of me as I walk in. I guess I've usually got a freshman class parading around in the garden. Nice. David
It is wonderful to have the birds...keeps me sane...saw some kingbirds this morning, always a nice sighting.....I'm sure there are Audubon groups in the city if you are interested...I know the city gets some interesting migrants......
