Hey, I've had the same issue when I lived in zone 8b/9. I don't know what zone you're in but I see a queen palm behind the BoP so I'm guessing a 9. Anyway, the soil where I lived (New Orleans) didn't drain well enough after a tropical storm and it wasn't getting enough full sun the dry it out. My birds of paradise did the same thing. They also looked similar to your 2nd picture where they had maybe a fungus that had taken hold. I ended up losing the tree because I didn't treat the fungus. I've grown more over the past 10yrs since I've been in zone 10b and Having a well draining soil and full sun is needed. For the fungus I would guess you may need something like Thiomyl to kill the fungus. I have to warn you it's really bad for humans/Pets so read the label if you use it and follow the instructions.
