Here I am, guaranteed to drive you crazy until I get this project completed. I hope you can help me. I am not sure if I belong here so If I do not, Allison, you know me well enough that you can tell me where to go......you know what I mean. Big Grin
I am going to give seeds a try. I have no success propagating with seeds but I am still trying. I have three varieties of Sweet Shrub...I found seed pods on all three today when I finally got out into the field. I brought them in and put them in a container on the windowsill to dry since they are soaked from this wonderful weather we have had. I need to know how to dry them properly, how and when to remove the seeds, how and when to plant the seeds. I am thinking maybe the WinterSow would be better for me then I will not overwater or do anything else stupid to kill them. These are going to be beautiful seeds if I can get them out of the pods without harming them. Here are two shots of the three different seed pods I got today. The one on the far left is Michael Lindsey. The ones on the far right I think is the Venus...the other one I do not remember the name and the tag blew off this past year in the storm. You can see the difference in the pods. So interesting.

You can see why I would like to raise these and share them with others. This plant is so charming to have in your garden. My grandmother had one when I was little. I think this one has more fragrance than the others.

I am hoping someone can either help me or send me to a place where I can find help.

Hi Jacquie,

I really don't know about sweet shrub but someone who does will most likely be along soon.

According to this, sweetshrub needs 90 days of cold stratification which would indicate that it's a good candidate for wintersowing

I've never grown from seed, always had volunteers, but it sounds like WS would be a good way to try and propagate them. Good luck!

I was raised in the newspaper business and am a news junkie. I have to remember that on here there are several NO topics. It is truly the best way to do it or it would be a madhouse. I am sorry I just completely forgot.

Hi Blankspace, and welcome!

It is getting late in the year, especially for perennials that often want cold stratification. But quick growing annuals sprout and grow fast in warm weather. There's still time for things like zinnias or marigolds that grow quickly. Best timing can be affected by weather, and I assume you're warm now in California.

Have you done any seed starting in the past?

Hi Karen. And thx for the welcome. The only seed starting i do is the ziplock bag method. I dont know anything else besides that really. I just read about wintersowing. I want to try cutting a branch and using root hormone and sand? All this is new to me but very interesting to learn. I

If anything i will save my milk containers from now until winter. My son drinks a lot of milk so i might not need to save up right now just yet. But it would be fun just to try for fun with one see how it does in spring warm weather. Hehe

You could still try a jug or two of quick growers, like zinnias or marigolds. Also, any biennial or perennial that doesn't need cold stratification could be started by this method (outside, in a milk jug). Most don't bloom the first year anyway, so this year you would have seedlings, next year blooming plants.
