I've had this for at least 12 years. I actually have more than one and I love them. I bought them, if memory serves, from Novelty Greens in HI. This is a hybrid between A. spectabile x watermaliense. I had a large plumeria tree just hanging out in the greenhouse so decided to mount this one into the crotch of it. I like the look

And this is another one that is in a different place, it has berries that are ripening! So excited!

Gina, that's another one that wasn't listed in our database yet so I submitted a proposal to add it.

Thanks! I **think*** Big Splash was hybridized by Dennis and Bill Rotolante at Silver Krome but I am not sure...its been around for quite a while. I have both the species parent plants, it would be fun to try and make this cross myself.

It's a great looking anthurium. I think that anthurium have a lot of stunning hybrids.

I may have just made one LOL. I managed to pollinate my big cupulispathum x pedatum (I call it, unofficially, 'Frilled Lizard')
Thumb of 2020-08-19/Gina1960/370734

with my equally large clavigerum

Frilled lizard is the ovule parent, clavigerum is the pollen parent. The berries are starting to form

Oh wow, Gina that will be one interesting plant. I am super excited for you.☺
It's got to be very exciting and rewarding to creat a new plant. This is what I aspire to do one day. I have a lot more to learn about the species though.

Very cool! I have 2 anthurium and one gave me 2 little flowers recently. I had thought that pollinating would be really interesting but the 2nd anthurium didn't flower, so there goes that!

When you have more mature anthuriums do they often bloom around the same time?

Anthuriums bloom on their own schedule unfortunately. Successful pollination depends on more than one factor, but the most important is that the plants being paired for the attempt have to be genetic matches. Anthurium have their species specific thing. You have to learn what section your plant is in if you want to try and make a hybrid. Certain section plants will cross with their own section (usually) and only a few other sections. (I say 'usually' because it has been proven that some Anthuriums that grow in different locales, i.e. the same exact plant in Southern Mexico and the same exact plant in further south-South America) will not pollinate each other. They are just genetically different enough to not mesh.

But a single species that makes more than one spadix on the same plant can and will be able to pollinate between the 2 if the timing is right. If you have one spadix that is in the male (pollen shedding) stage and one spadix that is not yet receptive (the female state with the drops of fluid on the spadix) you can save the pollen in the freezer and pollinate the spadix as soon as it is ready

Good to know! I'll definitely have to keep that in mind for next time. The anthurium that grew 2 spadix is a clarinervium. The other anthurium I have is a crystallinum and interestingly enough it grew a tiny leaf from a weird place in the root ball. I have it planted in a clear container otherwise I probably would have never even seen it. I was able to remove it with enough root for it to live, so I ended up with an anthurium baby anyway : )
Sometimes it's the little things that make this hobby so rewarding!
