I received a request to sell a fan or two of a daylily that I have. The person I received this request from only joined this site a few weeks ago and even starts out by saying they know that requests to purchase plants from other members is something that is discouraged. They go on to say that we live in the same state, but there is nothing in their profile to tell me this is true.

Just wondering if anyone else has received any requests like this and how you responded, or if you ignored the request. It may be innocent enough, but my gut tells me this is a scam, or at the very least, a pretty bold move for a new member to expect me to trust them.

I thought about not even posting this, but if other members are getting t-mails like this, I thought we would want to share the info.

As for nothing indicating that this person lives there in your state, they will probably have to tell you when they give a mailing address.

I understand a new person coming to a daylily site and wanting to try and buy or trade plants. I also understand not wanting to get scammed. So the person knows you have every right to turn them down, so if you feel uncomfortable with that, you could just ignore the request or explain why you feel uncomfortable or even might go so far as to explain what would make you change your mind. If it is a hard to find or expensive plant you might not want to get rid of any fans yet, but if it is something you have plenty of, you might give it a try.

I don't see an issue here, ask them for an address, price your plants what you want, and get payment before you send anything out. Don't sell anything you don't want to let go of.

My two cents, I agree with Frillylily, just get payment up front. I would worry more about trading where you are counting on their integrity. If it really bothers you though, just don't do it, not worth the stress.

We've had this discussion in previous years. There are people who set up an account and shot gun requests for plants to a lot of members looking for... cheap plants? free plants? In past threads, it turned out that the same person asked a lot of us for things.

I've gotten maybe three of them over the years and declined. They train me so hard at work on phishing and other cons, if it even smells a little like it could be someone just trying to take advantage of something or someone, I take a pass. If they stick around for a year and contribute, then maybe next fall I might email them and invite them to look at my plant list.

I think I will politely decline to sell any at this time. Like Tim, at work we are constantly reminded of phishing schemes and what to look out for.

I agree I've had new memebers ask me for 'free' plants, and didn't respond. But if a new member offered to pay me for them, I'd do it with payment up front. The way I look it, they are the one trusting a stranger-they could send me money and what if I didn't send out the plants, I guess it goes both ways.

I was asked to do a trade a few years ago. The person had been a member for a while but had no plants listed. I trusted my gut and said yes. She offered a daylily that I had been looking for as a trade (not listed as looking for). I was pleased with the plant I received and she messaged me with a big thank you. I guess you have to do what you are comfortable with. By the way both where older cultivars.
