These are growing with their feet wet in a lightly shaded area in western NC around 3000 feet altitude after an unusually warm, humid, and rainy August. Can you give me a clue? The stem is less than a foot tall and the blossoms are less than an inch across. Leaves are inconspicuous and sparse.

(I tried hard to render the actual color of the petals/sepals as close to the original as I could; this has made the border markings in the photo appear a bit yellower than they are on the original, where they are more whitish. I thought the larger colored areas were more important to render correctly. If you want to call this color lavender instead of lilac, won't disagree.)

What's truly weird about this flower, upon continued observation, is the way it changes color. In the morning, it's lilac like the picture above, which I carefully matched to the actual blossom. But in the afternoon, the red pigment is used up, and it looks pure blue as shown below.
