I have a large pot of saucy salvia. Think there may even be four plants in the pot. I am kind of concerned what to do in the winter because they are so bushed out. The pot will not fit through the bathroom door for cold nights. If I cut them back to what I consider a manageable size will they grow back like they are? I do not want to prune the plant and have it not grow back the way it is now. Pic is below.

Why not transplant each to individual pots?

I kind of like the way they look all bundled in the pot. Also do not know how much the roots would be intermingled.

The plant probably would not suffer if you got enough of the root ball. They're more resilient than you might think.

Thank you for chiming in Joseph. I haven't had the experience (and/or space) with plants that Eric is talking about. I just let them die with the frost/freeze and get new ones the following spring.

Best of luck Eric. Hope they all make it for you.

Eric, if you are in Florida, does it get down to freezing where you are? Maybe you can cover the pot with a giant trash can on cold nights and cover with an old blanket.

So it was about 29 for five hours. I covered it with a third of an inch thick blanket. It did fine. I'm optimistic for this plant this winter now.

Another test for this zone 10 salvia coming up. It is going to go down to 26f. Im Really hoping temp is only that low for an hour or two. I am going to add two regular sized towels on top and then cover the pot with the blanket i used last time. It will be under the house so i wont have to worry about anything getting wet.

I topped the plant with two towels and then covered it with the same blanket as last time. Temp was between 29 and 25 for six hours. Plant looks healthy. Tonight it may go down to 25 for 7 hours. This plant on the tag said zone ten. This plant is doing pretty well.

Today the temp was between 27f and 30f for ten hours. I covered the plant again with two towels and the blanket and it did well. I looked at the tag and it says non hardy zones 9-1 on it. I assume it means zone 10, but this plant is doing better than i expected.
